Can anyone recommend a good studio lighting book that is geared more towards the small studio with simple advice on basic set ups and theory.

not a book but this may help.

"Master Lighting Guide" by Christopher Grey (Amherst Media); geared towards portraits but sound advice and set-ups IMHO.
I also found "Photographing People" published by Rotovision reasonably good for ideas.
