Hi all
I'd like a little advice on studio lighting and some recommendations if possible?
I don't have a fortune to spend up to about £225, now I know that's probably not going to get a lot but some ideas or different options would be very helpful. I currently just use a Canon 580ex II with a diffuser and reflectors where necessary.
Ideally I'd like a something portable and not too heavy, I've checked out Ebay and there seems to be quite a lot on there for that sort of budget if you just do a search for studio lighting. I appreciate that with this price range the quality may not be brilliant but if anyone has any experience of the kit on there i'd love to hear.
Thanks in advance
James
With that kind of money I would just get a single head and stand, and build from there as your experience grows.
These are pretty good value as well, just add a brolly.

I bought the DZone twin 300 flash heads off ebay a couple of weeks ago. they arrived within 4 days. They feel very sturdy lights (not plastic) and on the shorts tests I have done are not bad. I have not had time to give them a full workout.
Early last year I bought some flash heads from Proline, again off ebay and they have covered 3 big events and lots of smaller ones with no trouble at all.
You do not get the control as with the more expensive flash heads and other people using flash around you is a pain but they recharge in a second and for the price they are ok.

A lot will depend on what you want to use them for, but you could also consider building on your existing 580 EXII. Search ebay for EZ fold softbox [24"], cheap radio triggers, and add another flash (I personally got a 540EZ which isn't compatible with my camera, but that problem goes away when using radio triggers).
Flash, one softbox, and triggers would set you back less than 200 - the whole lot will probably fit into your existing camera bag as well so is extremely portable.
Depending on what type of photographer you are, here are some great kits by 'Westcott' and 'PhotoBasics by Westcott':
