I have a Nikon F65 (35mm) and a Tamron 28-300mm lense. I'm teased to purchase a D70.... will my lense be compatible or do you need digital lenses?
No. The mount is the same, and I've not heard of compatibility problems between third party lenses and Nikon in general, and Tamron in particular.
You are no doubt aware that because of the crop factor, your zoom will have the effective AoV of a 42-450mm lens. However, all superzooms are a compromise optically (I know for example just how soft the slides I took with my old ones look now compared to either primes or better zooms), and while this does get disguised on film to an extent, digital can be unforgiving of lesser lenses.
thanks Tim. Reason why I asked, I saw in Practical Photography that digital lenses were more expensive than for those on 35mm? I just assumed that they must be different.
Cheers
At wide angles some lenses can give problems with digi cameras, and reflections from sensors can cause a problem with some lenses I have heard. Most manufacturers are updating their lenses to suit and most have low cost alternatives. You probably need to watch out for some lenses that are digital only if you wish to use them on your film camera. e.g Sigma 18 to 50mm will not fill a full 35mm negative, bit its low cost and PP thought it worked well.
At wide angles some lenses can give problems with digi cameras...
That's true, due to the steep angle at which the light exits the lens. With film that is not a problem, but digital sensors are far happier when light strikes them at a lesser angle.
However, one main reason for "digital" lenses is because of the crop factor rendering people's existing wide angle lenses ineffective (eg, with a x1.5 camera, such as those from Nikon, a 20mm becomes an effective 30mm, 24mm becomes 36mm etc).
