Hi....going on holiday in May, our regular taxi man can take us to MC. airport but cannot collect us 2 weeks later and struggling to find an alternative.
Would we experience any difficulty hiring a taxi outside the airport to travel some 50 miles ? ...do drivers want this type of journey ?
....What could I expect to pay for 54 miles...all motorway, 6pm in the evening ?

If I know Taxi drivers and cab fares, You would be better of hiring a car and driving yourself home, Or offer a pal/relative a cash insentive to do so......
My guess as to what they would charge for going 54 miles off their patch, Hence 54 miles to return to home territory, Would be arround £250 to £300 quid.....!!!
You could book a car hire deal that would allow you to return it to somewhere local to you, So pick it up at the airport, Drop it of in town the next day....
Worth a look anyhow.
A suprisingly large number of people taking taxis from Manchester airport are going on long journeys - across the Pennines etc.
Try airportcarz - I think the fare will be around £100

blimey !!! ....taxi drivers must earn more than wedding photographers
Thanks all...I can get a local taxi firm to collect us for £55 but a bit concerned he might not turn up...'gonna have to consider driving myself.

As Vince says- 'Hire a car'!!! - or pay a mate!!
Don't forget there's a rail station in the airport. You could get a train most of the way??? (Yes - subject to there being rail line towards your home...)
not trying to teach egg sucking...but ...you might be better posting a thread on Tripadvisor...there's always someone with local knowledge
We fly from manchester airport often and we always drive and use this carpark http://www.aph.com/parking/manchester_airport/index.shtml?ref=p79
Quite reasonable and very efficient, we have been using them for15 years or more and always been very sattisfied, usually costs less than £30 for a week.
Hiring a car and dropping off at a different location has a charge that will probably wipe out most (all?) of any cost saving. Drive and park may be cheaper but not much.
Manchester airport has a rail station and I googled' manchester airport train':
The Station, Manchester Airport’s integrated transport hub, offers fast and frequent train services linking the airport with over 100 destinations across the North of England and beyond.
Fly by Train
Get off to a flying start before you board the plane by catching the train direct to the heart of Manchester Airport.
First TransPennine Express
Frequent direct services run to and from with TransPennine Express and Northern Rail, run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The Lake District
Chester - with Arriva Train Wales - requires a interchange at Manchester Piccadily
North Wales - with Arriva Train Wales - requires a interchange at Manchester Piccadily
Then get a taxi?
I hope this helps
The missus usually takes a taxi from Rotherham to Manchester airport when she flies. It costs £55 for the trip (a similar distance), using a pre-booked Rotherham cab company.
Don't jump into the first cab you meet at the airport. They'll have higher rates for the convenience.

...our regular driver charges us £100 for both ways but for the first time in years has been booked up and when I think how good value it is, I'm not surprised.
Many years ago we used to park at Castle Hill Farm, but he wants £68 now..add on the fuel and getting a lift for £100 is a much better deal.

They do have a broomstick park you know

...that would work going....but not for us, we fly at 7am. ...as for return, if you don't book a specific train it's £27 each...add on a tenner from the station and it's getting pricey.
If you do have to take your own car then consider all the local hotels that will provide free car parking for the duration if staying with them the night before you jet off
Have often seen us get a deal for room only £40-£50 and car parking thrown in & free shuttle bus to/from airport
edit: & seeing your last post it works well for a 7am flight as you're only minutes away

The SAS Radisson is excellent and there is a covered walkway from the hotel to one of the three terminals (great photo opportunity too when the blue lights are on)
