Been trying to think up something to supersede the old Tell it how it is group, which seems to have died despite a few attempts to revive it over the last year.
What started to happen was that it got a bit "nice"/"diluted" after an initial period of fisticuffs... everyone ended up saying how lovely things were. TO be fair, there were many genuinely lovely shots there so the comments were just. But not in the spirit of the group....
So would anyone be up for this...
Same entrance criterion as Tell It How It Is - if you upload, you accept that you may get comments that you don't like and agree not to spit the dummy and get upset or flounce
You upload a shot and put "something" into the "about", preferably your intention with the shot - what you were after achieving... but "something quite interesting" please.
For a sense of "balance", when commenting, you have to make 3 points that you don't like, and 3 points that you do like.
It may be a struggle to find 3 of each, but that's the name of the game...
Do not go over 3 - it could seem like you've got a vendetta if you have 15 negatives, or a crush if you do 15 positives ![]()
The points can be very short bullet points, or paragraphs... just so long as a normal human being with the ability to read English can understand the point.
it's an idea anyway - slightly more structured than the old group, but the same vibe... and having the positive points too gives it a bit of balance
Was thinking of calling it "Ying Yang" - that oriental balance thing...
It'd be worth doing it we got 20+ people regularly posting stuff in there....
Okey dokey...shall we upload in the 'old' group area, or are you going to start a new one?
Malc
New start I reckon - and lets see if anyone's actually up for it before we start.
Have a practice on this shot if you like... 3 positive, 3 negative

Good idea Ade. I was only wondering about this this morning - I don't know if I mentioned this before but years ago, before digital, there were portfolio circles. Leica was one of the largest I believe. You became a member and enlarged a photo and mounted it placing a comment sheet on the back. It was then placed in a large portfolio mail box along with 15 or 20 others in your "group" and the box was posted to one of the members. The member then went through and commented on each photo (may have even scored them) and once finished posted to the next one in the group. I believe they worked really well and if you get a selection of enthused members, each with the same goal in mind, this could work too.
When we review cameras we have plus and minus ratings. It's sometimes hard to find three negatives though, but certainly worth a go.
I think the failing of the old group was that you could just fall on one side of the fence, positive if you're after mates, negative if you're having a proper battle... and bizarely, you had people leaving for both reasons!
Some got bored with it being too nice, others flipped over rude comments.... the comments need to be objective and about the photo, we got things like "only and idiot would have taken this shot".... which was true in many cases, but it's not a comment on the shot but a dig at the tog.
oh - the logo's there cause I just threw it on Facebook
Really does need a good nucleus of people for it to work, so hope people do join in
I'd be up for joining this group. It's great to get comments about how nice photos are, but even better to get something constructive so that you can improve. I use the Critique gallery a bit and think it's great.
I'd agree with some of Pete's comments, but for me:
+ I like the tight crop
+ the exposure of the haziness is great
+ sense of interest, cold and mystery that has been injected into what I would normally think of as a really boring subject (who finds pylons interesting!)
- overly purple tone is unnatural
- logo
- lack of contrast
So I've never been a member of a epz 'group' before. How does it work? Where do we put photos?
Thanks,
Lianna
Groups are a bit like little "Ephotozines" of their own - you get a group gallery and a group forum where you upload pix and discuss things.
If/When I create this one, I'll post a link in this thread - you just click on that and it'll take you to the page, there's a "join group" button there.
Once you're in, you can use the "group activity" menu option to see if there are any new photos/comments (http://www.ephotozine.com/groups) That becomes very addictive, it's like the forum "recent activity" page.
Leaving that logo on the pic above has given you lot an easy negative ![]()
Thanks Ade - I'll join it once you've started it then.
And yeah the logo is an easy negative ![]()
I'll swap it for preferring a bit more space on the left and at the top because though I like the tight crop I think it's a little too tight on the left. The left pylon is closer to the edge of the frame than the right pylon is, and seeing as this is a fairly abstract image, I'd prefer to see that balanced perfectly with more space on the left. I thought that might be overly nitpicky and show everyone my OCD tendencies for equal balance ![]()
Thanks,
Lianna
The trouble was, the quality in TIHII was well above average, so it was quite hard sometimes finding anything negative to say.
It's too good might have worked ? But not really in the spirit ![]()
3 of each bullet points might work
the tight crop happened becauise there was a foreground blurry branch at the bottom right - tried all sorts to clone it out convincingly , but it just looked wrong every time.... so cropped off the right in the end... then the left had to come in to balance things up.
actually... here it is...
look at the crap on my sensor!!!!
+ The sky appears to have some "grain" which to me fits in with the atmospheric feel to the shot
+ Including the two different styles of Pylons
+ The positioning of the right hand foreground Pylon not blocking the other two
- Logo
- Crop even more on the left but leave a little more space at the top
- Overall a little too dark... perhaps increase exposure or brighten up the highlights a little
I would be up for a group like this.
Only problem is that 3 people in front of me have each logged 6 points, so that means they have spotted 18 things about the pic.
So I'm going to be saying the same things as everyone else really, could get a bit repetitive ?
ok - so a few people have shown the way to do it, cheers everyone
You can see as point need only be 1 word long - so it's not hugely time consuming.
Does "Yin Yang" make sense as a group name?
