I have a Nikon D5100 and Nikon Camera Control 2 but I am unable to get my camera recognised.
Any suggestions please.

Check you've got the USB mode set to the correct one. Assuming the D5100 is the same as the D300 you need to go into the camera setup menu and change the USB mode to MTP/PTP.

The other option is 'Mass Storage' which allows your computer to see it as an external drive, but Camera Control won't see the camera if it's in this mode.

I've also had connection problems when using a very long USB lead.

Many thanks for taking the time to respond to my question.
I have a Nikon D80 which I use with camera control pro 2 using the method you suggested without any problems, but I can't seem to find the settings on my Nikon D5100 in any of the menus.

Strange one. There's a complete list of all the menu options here but there's no mention of USB options. Perhaps it's supposed to detect the mode automatically.

Download Control My Nikon and try it with that (14 day free trial).
