1,3,10,20 years what do you think the major developments will be in photography?
We have already seen a radical change with the introduction of digital, and a growth in technology
For me
If technology improves at its present rate, then we may see the chip outgrowing the need for any lens, now I dont suppose a flexible (controlled) multilayered 10`000mp chip is even been conceived yet, but when it is the controlled flexible contoured could control the focal length from 5-1000mm, the multilayered could control the 10stop exposure range, of course dof would be added post shot,
Dreaming? Obviously, but what do you think is around the corner?
steve
multilayerd chip
lol
if i knew that and the next 10 questions i would be working for canon
Well im foooked.
been up since 2am
then off to Derbyshire at 3am.
off to bed.

digital zooms are crap because they effectivly crop the chip, reducing the image quality, if you could concave the chip you could zoom digitally without affecting the immage quality
would be a nice start
A very interesting question. Any future technologists out there? Within the next 5 years I expect there will be improvements in what we are currently using, that is overcoming the current technolgy limitations. With 5 to 10 years I would expect some real innovations to arise, and 10 - 20 I could see a complete departure from the limitations imposed by lens optics. Mike
'cerebrographs'
Actual visual images/thoughts broken down and re processed in an extra-cranial format. All colour correction/filtration/exposure compensation done in a split second by the brain as usual but actually formatted so that others can view it. A sort of 'real reality'. I expect to have the prototype completed by the end of the week.
Or maybe I'll just sober up instead.
Ian.
one of the things mentioned in teh recent interview with the head guy for the development of new sony DSLRs was that he expects to chips to be developed that are so senstive to light but with reduced noise that it would remove the need for flash. I see what he is getting at but surely flash will still be needed for creative purposes.
Things that I think will happen in the next 5/10 years, maybe ....
1.much better battery life
2.Card size will start to win the race against megapixals and we will have cards that can fit alot of RAW files on them
3 A good RAW standard will be developed (maybe DNG further down the line) that will contain a good lossless compression and enable us to to use alot less space for the massive megapixal cameras that would be out.
4.DSLRs will have small teargas nozzles fitted for shooting into the face of jobworths security guards
5. someone will make a white DSLR.
6. DSLRs will be enabled to transmit files wirelessly through whatever fast telecommunications protocol is the current best. This will start to outdate all the wireless and bluetooth DSLRs around.
7. In addition to all the preset metering settings , point and shoot compacts will have compostion suggestions - it will give you several different compositions to choose from after you have taken the shot.
I can imagine being able to shoot a scene using technology that gives such clarity into infinity, that once you've downloaded the image you can zoom in to wherever you want and have a perfect, sharp image whether it's a landscape, or looking through the trees over by that lake by the far hill, and you'll be able to choose composition, depth of field, aperture, you name it. After you've downloaded it.
Ian I can see that too - cortical pictures. You'd just need a microchip implanted, and once activated the data would be picked up by a receiver in your image programme - or even remotely to some distant receiver - and downloaded as a file.

Mind you I'm sure there's already technology available to do just these sorts of things and it's just not available to the general public. Good for spies though ..! although they'd hardly spend an evening agonising over whether to convert an image to b/w or wondering if the composition is exactly right ;-]
Auto multi-exposure shot so that you can pick the DOF that suits - camera exists already, just that the res is still fairly low
Fun speculating but my guess...
Massive pixel resolution, obviously, terapixels ultimately which will indeed reduce the need for optical zooms, but boy will that one optic you have need to be good to serve a chip like that. As Steve says, maybe no optic and a multi-layered chip mechanism would resolve (pun intended - groan) this.
I'm not sure we'll need memory cards, we'll all have wireless access to super-broadband, so your images will be sent straight over the air to your designated PC as they are taken (and can be pulled back so you can check them if needed - basically your camera screen will be able to browse all images on your available disks).
There's already technology to detect direction as well as colour/intensity of light, so focussing can be done afterwards (I guess we definitely won't need a lens then !).
