Hi, I want to create the high key venture look for friends and family with a view to starting a small business taking portraits in peoples homes. If possible i want to start out with just a two light set up and a white background of some sort so as to keep the prices down. Obviously this will give a grey background as the backgound won't be lit sperately - is there a fairly easy way to edit in a pure white background in photoshop or other software package that doens't take ages and isn't hugely fiddly?

    Thanks,
    SD

I've just read some of the previous posts on this and realise the high key look may not be totally accurate - basically i just want to know if there is an effective way to turn the background white while not changing the skin tone/colours of the subject? Thanks!

You could use select - colour range, click on the background with the eye dropper, adjust fuzziness so just the background area is highlighted, then open a new levels or curves layer, and the area selected with be applied automatically to the layer mask, and will be the only area affected by adjustment. Or just use levels/curves, use the white point eyedropper on the background, and if it has too much effect on the subject you can selectively remove the effect by brushing in black on the layer mask.

Then send the saturation and contrast into overdrive and charge 3 grand.

    Like that, very funny!

Seriously tho', Instead of copying the Venture look which a helluva lot of people do (to say the least), why not create your own style and sell that to people?

You can get a white background with a 2 light setup. Put one light 1 meter from the background and expose the background for f 11 and put 1 light in front of the subject and expose for f8. Put your camera settings to 125th sec at f8 and you will get a white background without having to manipulate it with software. the secret is overexpose the background and correctly expose the subject. If you want to bleach the image more go in to photoshop and create a duplicate layer and change the screen mode to screen and move the slider to get the sesired affect. All the images in my pf were created this way and i shall be glad to advise you more if required. kind regards james

Thanks James - you've created the look I want to achieve and what i've been asked to do for various family and friends. What background do and lights do you use? I am pretty much decided on the elinchrom d-lite 2, but the background i'm not as sure on.

    Thanks again,
    Sarah
