I've been asked to do a job this evening for which I've got no time to prepare - go home, pick up gear and go straight to customers house. I need to take head-shots of 5 adults and children (for visas) with white background. I'm thinking that instead of using my background support with white sheet, I could put my octa softbox behind their heads for background, with a 60cm square softbox for key and do it that way. 2 lights with no background needed. Sound sensible?

Should be fine, I sometimes use an Octa as a white background. Perhaps take a reflector panel as well to give you a few more options?

Don't forget sync leads/ir/radio triggers and light meter. Be kind of a pain if you couldn't fire it when you got there!

Everytime someone blags a quick passport shot I whack 'em in front of an square box pop an octo either side front and click......the problem comes when the passport office start saying the eyes are in the wrong place, too much shoulder etc etc etc....more trouble than they're worth sometimes.

Send them down the trainstation to the three quid booth.

I know what you mean, but now that I've worked out crop with hide to resize, I can churn out the required proportions easy now and they were struggling cos their visa needs something different to passport photos apparantly. Anyway, they're paying my way (for the nuisance factor), just want to get it over and done with quick. It's one thing doing it in the studio when you've got everything there but carting it around is a bit of a proverbial. Wink

Don't remind me - last Sunday I got to some woodland with 3 guys for a band shoot, got it all set up (hassie, eli ranger system, etc.) and found I was without trigger or sync leads - I was soooo cussing myself! I had to leave them with the gear whilst I drove back to get them - luckily we were only 5 minutes drive from home. Sad

if its for a tiny passport photo, why bother with a huge octa and a softbox?. they dont need an artfully lit pretty picture, they need a true representation of themselves, not smiling, and bright clear and sharp.

a couple of speedlites (one to blow the wall behind), a stand and a shoot through brolly. sorted

Unless you think they'll want large prints (of their non smiley faces), id keep it mega simple.

It's an octa softbox, not the big 2m thing, it's a bit over a 1m - easier to find room for than the background support. They don't have a wall to use in their house, so I need a background of sort.

well, the good thing about landing at someones house with loadsa gear, is that they feel theyre getting their moneys worth!

Wink I wouldn't like them to feel short changed! It's only a camera, 2 lights and 2 softboxes. You should see what I take on a proper shoot!

and they love the look on your face when you see that the biggest room in the house is a 6ft square box

    google: passport photo booth berkshire...

Alternatively it's the white sheet on the floor and you take them lying down (them, not me) then PS the background. Wink
