The hospital rang the other day to speak to me. I was out so the wife answered the phone.

It was next door's wife. Clearly. As wives belong to the physical building. As is evidenced by the phrase 'housewife'.
Strikes me that most people are missing the point i.e. that the post should be a response to the previous one, but should be as a result of a misunderstanding of the previous post. Anyone want to carry on, under the clarification?
