Quality is a matter of opinion, not a matter of fact! ![]()
It also depends what sort of camera you are talking about. If (for example) Medium Format, then a Hasselblad H1 with a Leaf Valeo 22Mp back might be tough to beat!!
Why do you ask this question? Are you considering buying a digicam?
Or has someone criticised your existing camera? Lol!!
The reason on which such questions are asked are the desire to buy " the perfect weapon " and to become "superman".
It is quite clear, and likely it is peculiar to any normal person. But the fact also that everyone for itself(himself) chooses priorities. Everyone can name the chain of Top (five or more) manufacturers. If at you has not developed own opinion it is possible to address for example to "Harry Potter" from www.dpreview.com or to "Ordinary Man" from www.luminous-landscape.com
In my opinion, the concrete manufacturer already not so is important: the main thing to choose that is convenient first of all for you, and that you can use more than 50 percent opportunities of your camera!
P.S. Many spoke, that, for example SONY is
able to do only TVs, BUT its
photo-matrixes are on the overwhelming
majority of digicams!

According to THIS:
"The top five digital camera producers are Sony, Olympus, Canon, Fujifilm, and Nikon (though some say that Kodak is off and on in that group). Of these, Olympus and Canon will gain market share. Fujifilm and Nikon will hold market share. Sony will lose market share in 2004, and possibly even the #1 position. Why? See the previous point. Sony isn't prepared to get there, while Olympus and Canon are. Fujifilm and Nikon will get there begrudgingly. No other producer other than Kodak has a realistic shot at breaking into the top five in 2004."
So it looks like Sony is currently the market leader. With Olympus, Canon, Fuji and Nikon in the next 4 spots.
Well, based on Bob S's comment I guess you can say Sony wouldn't be in pole position if it wasn't for the quality of their products!! ![]()
Before digital, Fuji cameras were absolute cr*p. But then again Sigma lens were also in this league. Fuji will have to stand the test of time. I have only had to return one camera for repair and that was a Fuji 4900.Nobody mentioned Minolta which over the years have stood up well.
Fuji have had a rather downmarket image hitherto. I must say (as a long-time Canon fan... currently on loan to Sony!) I was quite surprised to find so many Fuji users on an enthusiast site - but clearly they are trying to shift their market positioning.
But it also has to be said that brands like Canon and Nikon no longer have the "prestige" tag that they did, say 20 years ago. This is as a result perhaps of chasing volume at the bottom end of the market.
We should not be too surprised that Sony is top of the tree for digicams. They are the brand of choice for professional videographers and (arguably) a digital stills cam has at least as much - if not more - in common with a digital camcorder as with a 35mm film camera. Sony makes the sensors in most digicams, of whatever brand.
Also Sony's long term association with one of the world's top lens manufacturers, Carl Zeiss, will not have done any harm! You can see its arch-rival in the electronics field, Panasonic, desperately trying to emulate Sony by linking up with Leica for lenses! (But with rather less success, it has to be said).
Sony's use of Carl Zeiss is for it's pro-sumer camcorders. Pro models, DV CAM and Digital Beta usually have Canon lenses and some used Fujinon lenses and perhaps still do.
Sony's main rivals in this field being Panasonic and JVC.

As A Fuji user and proud of it, considering Sony are supposed to be the Number one I'm suprised how realativley few Sony Users there are on this site
and without a doubt Canon, Nikon and Fuji would prove to be the most popular makes used by photographers on this site.
As for Canon and Nikon no longer being prestige makes I dont see many Pro photographers using anything else.
no doubt the Sony users are still sore at spending all that money on a 828 when they could have bought a proper DSLR.
