Im off to South Africa on 18th July for my honeymoon. Ill be in and around Cape Town and the Garden Route.
As this may be the only time I ever go there I want to make the most of any photo opportunities. So I have a threefold question; first what should I not miss? Second, what kit should I take? Finally, I have concerns about the safety of my kit while travelling so what advice do you have for its safety on planes and while in SA?
Below is a list of my available equipment, while Id like to take it all that's not an option.
1. Canon Mini DV camcorder + tapes, charger, batts, wide and tele lenses
2. Canon S70 + charger, batts, CF cards
3. Nikon D100 + charger, batts, CF cards
4. Nikon F80
5. Sigma 17-35mm
6. Sigma 24-70mm
7. Sigma 70-200mm
8. Sigma 2x TC for above
9. Sigma 105mm Macro
10. Nikon 35-70mm
11. Nikon 80-200mm
12. Nikon 60mm Macro
13. Nikon SB26 flash
14. Various tripods and mono pods
15. Various bags from compact pouch up to a Lowe Pro Magnum AW
16. Assorted widgets
The Sigma lenses are EX series and are therefore fast (f2.8) but big and heavy. The Nikon zooms are small and light but slow (f4.5-f5.6).

I always make room in the kit for the vaseline....
For soft focus effects of course...
Oh boy, photography and a honeymoon together? Make sure that your wife has learned the camcorder before you get married. At least she will have something to do when you are shooting pictures.
But if you want a good start for your wedding - use a compact (the Canon S70?)- do not make photography the main activity - your wife will recall that for the next (hopefully) 45 years...

As far as kit is concerned I'd take what you can in a bag that doesn't look like your carrying loads of expensive gear, that always attracts attention where ever you go.
As far a safety goes just keep your eyes open and know whats happening around you. If you give the criminals an oppertunity they will take it. Crime is obviousley higher in the main cities as it is in the rest of the world. The garden route will be quieter. Its a lovely part of the country, enjoy your Honeymoon

Many thanks for all the replies.
Not quite what I was expecting though....
It may help if I tell you that I've been living with my better half for five years so She knows what to expect. As a matter of fact she will be relying on me to get some shots for her web site and if any make the grade to put on the walls of our new extension.
So come on, start thinking like photographers..

Oh, if you insist... ![]()
I'd put the Canon S70 in my pocket, and fill a bag with the Nikon D100 and the three Nikon lenses, and any other gadgets that will fit in the bag. And take one monopod and one tripod, of course. But that's just me, I suppose it's a subjective thing.
Hard work, by the way, imagining taking a Nikon (since you only have one Canon still camera on the list).
;-D

Thanks Conrad.
I don't mind subjective. All opinions are welcomed.
Does anyone have answers to the other questions; security of kit, places not to be missed?
Thanks Chris, I just need to get SUGARBIRD's attention.
Does anyone else travel with their camera?
Perhaps you can help me...
