I have an ancient (24 years) Velbon tripod which is still going strong and has everything I want except a quick release head. Rather than buy a brand new tripod which, with all the adjustments this has would probably cost a fortune, I wondered if it would be cheaper to buy a new head for it. Can anybody recommend any suppliers?
The head itself unscrews from the centre column, so it can be screwed on the bottom and the pan/tilt section is fixed with a clamp, so I suppose it could be replaced at either of these joints.
Cheers

I went down this route with my old Bilora tripod. After looking at alternatives, contacting Bilora (not stocked any more), I eventually made one! Works well, tho' I've since bought Cullmann tripod (and a few QR plates!)
I'm hoping that the head fittings are pretty standard. It would be a wrench to get rid of the tripod, it's been a good servant over the years.
Jessops stock a quick release fitting (about 8) which fits on a 1/4 Whitworth thread (standard modern camera fitting). Very good fitting with a trigger to unlock it and a slide to lock the trigger (camera slides on and locks automatically, then push the slide to lock the trigger and so prevent accidental release of the camera).
I like the sound of that Jessopps fitting Ellis, I assume it just fits on any standard tripod head without even having to replace the entire head.
Cheers everyone.

One other thought: you could try eBay. Its the sort of thing that someone digs out and puts up for sale (I've noticed a good number of QR plates for various makes, in the past)
Just been out and got the Jessops universal quick release plate, good value at 8.45. My trusty tripod and my wallet would both like to thank you Ellis. :0)
