I have given a few this week but certainly wont be giving them out daily unless the images really are excellent.

My sentiments exactly.
Limiting it to one award a week makes people think much harder about who they should award it to. I know I can just give away one a week but the overall perception of the award has been reduced [by a factor of 7] for me!!!
I suppose this gets around the (minor?) problem of people running duel or more accounts so they can award friends even more often?
As for the case of "special" eh I wouldn't get all hung up about it to be honest. An award should be special because of the person/organisation handing out the award and the general standard that they set with the awards that they hand out. Shifting it from the once a week to the once a day simply expands the base pool that can possibly be awarded - but its still the awarders choice how often they award.
I mean we could follow through and say that once a week is pretty common (that's 52 awards a year!) lets shift it to once a month - for 12 really special photos only.
