Quote: but keep getting lots of shadows

    Ermm...

One has to ask the question...

"What is causing the shadows?" Andy.

The answer is based around the need for other/more lights to balance the shadow caused by the single light source (no matter how well (or not)) diffused.

All this whilst keeping the backdrop white.

Can you explain how you are using the SB800 and/or the lighting set-up/diagram?

As Mike has mentioned, you need lighting set up behind your subject, and directed at the bg, possibly a tad over-exposed, in order to get the background of your subject to be white.

have a look at my portfolio at the picture called 'coral number 6' this was taken with an sb-800 lighting an off white wall behind her, and an sb-900 to the side.

The sb-800 was on a stand directly behind her pointing up at the wall set to wide beam and full power.

the other thing you need to do if you can is move the subject away from the background, as this will reduce the shadows cast onto it. Smile

If you don't have the luxury of a 2 gun set-up, You could try a silver reflector to reflect some of the single source.

ie: One gun set to the left of subject large silver reflector set to the right to help cancel some of the shadows.

Its not ideal, But can work, However your better of with 2 light sources, Be they speedlights or studio strobes, You biggest problem with the single light option is going to be getting enough light to keep the backdrop white, Without blowing the subject....!!!

To get a pure white backdrop it needs to be light 2 stops higher than the main light, and the model sufficiently far away (about 1 to 2 metres) so that bouncing back on the subject.
