This is a pretty random question and I might be pushing my luck here but anyway here goes... I was watching Americas next top model last night (series 5) and they did this very basic photo shoot using vaseline on the models, the photos were really amazing. They were b&w headshots taken outdoors with all natural light and a black sheet in the background. The skin looked so soft like satin. I wish I had an example to show. Anyway if anyone saw it or knows that technique I would love to hear about it Smile

Our tutor recommended KY jelly as it washes off easier (APPARENTLY!)

I wonder where this thread will go Wink

I've never tried the vaseline soft focus technique, as it seems a bit daft to buy a hi-res lens and then degrade the image, when you can get a similar result with a Box Brownie! Wink

Vaseline is supposed to be very good for giving the skin a soft silky look but a bit messy for the model to get rid of I would have thought. Quicker and easier for the photographer than using PS.

Vaseline Extra Care would probably be a better bet!.

I prefer dulux silk emulsion; smooths the skin and low shine.

If smearing it on your filter does it for you, then go for it ;- )

I think you can get a similar effect using a holey stocking.

Many years ago I used to work with an old 'tog who swore by 'nose oil' smeared on a skylight filter as the best aid to portraits

Nose Oil is the grease you get when you run your finger down the crease at the side of your nose... Yuk!

Thanks heaps for your replies! the photographer didn't actually smear it on the lens. It went on the models face! Im guessing to give the skin a smooth look, im not sure?
