In late March I put a roll of fresh Velvia 100 into my F90X and ran off 12 shots in daylight. I put the camera away until a month ago when I shot some pics with studio flash. I got the slides back last week and they are all a little soft like a RAW digital file. Can anyone sugest why this is? I wonder if the time span could do this? All 36 shots are like this, any ideas? Thanks

Could be something to do with heat at some time in the films life.
i used to keep mine in the fridge until a couple of hours before use, never had any problems.

It is a long while since I used film but I recall that ageing in film can cause a reduction in contrast. Might this be the problem rather than a real softness of image?

From my experience, it won't be age or heat. I regularly use out of date film and some which has got very hot in the bag whilst abroad with no detectable signs of deterioration.

Was these Velvia shots taken with the same lens, or several? If just one, then - have you tried other film such as B+W (C41 is easiest single layer of emulsion) in the camera and got the same results? If so, then lens/camera is likely to be the issue.

Another possibility use of Autofocus versus manual focus.

thanks chaps, I normally get superb results with the F90X and the 28-105 AFD Nikkor. The studio flash shots were taken at f11 so the DoF would overcome any slight errors in focusing. The shots were of my artwork which is done on a flat panel and I usually get really sharp results. I wondered if it might be ageing and it not being in a fridge for 3-4 months.

Were you relying on autofocus? The AF could well have got confused when faced with a flat subject...
