I'm currently photographing New Zealand landscapes on Velvia from an Xpan II. I had 10 rolls processed and all were good apart from 1 set - they had a straight and fine scratch running horizontally on every tranny about 5mm from the bottom.
I was a tad disappointed and took them back. At first they offered to digitally touch them up if I paid for the scans but eventually they agreed to scan 3 images at 128MB each and put them onto CD for me with the digital touching up. I am paying a small contribution of NZ$20 (GBP 8) for this.
I'm happy but also unsure whether I should have got more from them? Any thoughts?

If you fully rewind the film into the cassette, they are more likely to use a film retriever than open the cassette.
Tram lines or scratches along the length of film are often due to dust in the light-trap of the cassette so it may scratch the film as it is being run through the camera.
