I'm currently photographing New Zealand landscapes on Velvia from an Xpan II. I had 10 rolls processed and all were good apart from 1 set - they had a straight and fine scratch running horizontally on every tranny about 5mm from the bottom.

I was a tad disappointed and took them back. At first they offered to digitally touch them up if I paid for the scans but eventually they agreed to scan 3 images at 128MB each and put them onto CD for me with the digital touching up. I am paying a small contribution of NZ$20 (GBP 8) for this.

I'm happy but also unsure whether I should have got more from them? Any thoughts?

If they have ruined them then they should pay for them! It happened to me in Germany and the shop just did it without any quibble whatsoever.

If it goes right through the strip, might have been a problem with the canister.

The moral of the story is. Rewind the film fully into the cassette so they have to open the cassette instead of just ripping the film out.

If you fully rewind the film into the cassette, they are more likely to use a film retriever than open the cassette.

Tram lines or scratches along the length of film are often due to dust in the light-trap of the cassette so it may scratch the film as it is being run through the camera.
