For next years' wedding season I want to try and use a video light, and wondered if anyone has any recomendations?
Is the Lowel ID light seems to be a good option?

Video lights are for video. Video needs a continuous light for obvious reasons, it doesn't need to have a lot of power and, for the target market, video lights don't have to produce a good quality of light either.

Still photography is different, a still shot is a frozen moment in time so lighting faults will be obvious. It needs to be a lot more powerful and it doesn't need to be a continuous light.

That's why people use flash. It's the tool for the job. Even an on-camera flash, bounced off of a white ceiling, will do in some situations, and there are plenty of other things you can do easily and quickly, the Strobist site is well worth a look

    Garry,

With the best will in the world, that's absolute crap. Loads of wedding photographers use video light these days - it's all about the right tools for the job, or adding something different in order to differentiate yourself from the competition.

Jules - I've got a Lowel iD that I bought from Prokit earlier in the year after having a play with another photographer's a while back. I can honestly say that it's the single, best piece of kit that I've bought this year... Gimme a shout if you have any more specific questions, but I can highly recommend one.

Hahahaha.... What a load of crock! Video lights are used by many photographers, and they work extremely well, especially in a wedding environment.

Jules, I was going to suggest the Lowel as soon as I'd read the first line, having used one it's stunning. One suggestion is take an assistant to handle the lighting while you shoot, makes it much easier and more flexible.

Yes, it's usable at high ISO. But I certainly wouldn't use one, flash does the job so much better.

Oh... And if you do go for the Lowel... Get the barndoors too...

You better tell Yervant the Australian wedding photographer who has become pretty famous (and charges a fortune) for using the video light technique.

Garry, I do believe you are a little biased towards flogging the flash idea as the best!

Biased towards doing the job well?

    Yes, I suppose I am.

And I also accept that not everyone thinks that using high ISO unnecessarily is unacceptable. I accept that not everyone works the same way. I also accept that some popular photographers photoshop everything to death, only shoot in jpeg and what have you - but that makes them neither right nor wrong..

My point is simply that flash is a much better tool, and is far less obtrusive.

Doing the job well... so using Flash over another technique that will provide the results you and/or the client want? Is that doing the job well?

And our point is that you're wrong.

You're biased towards flash, fair enough, but you're also a million miles away from the original question. Jules came on asking about video lights. Had he wanted an alternative to video lights then I'm guessing that he'd have asked that too.

I use my video light regularly. I use it in addition to, and in conjunction with flash photography in order to give the results that I want in any given situation. To write it off at the outset as unsuitable is not only narrow-minded, it's actually incorrect.

So anyway, back on topic... Wink

Fair enough, we'll agree to disagree. And I'll stop watching this thread.

ummm I'd say different tools for different effects

    Here are
some photos of Yervant and Joe Buissink running a course using video lighting. The later has shot weddings including Jennifer Lopez, Kelsey Grammar, Jessica Simpson, and Brendan Frazier. Better tell them they should be using flash.

Ive seen Yervant and Ghionis using these lights to great effect - I think Gary is thinking they are used to light the subject?? rather than adding a dimension to the background or rim light. Been looking at getting one too so Jules let me know which yoy decide on please Wink
