Can anyone advise me as to what I have to do to beable to view CR2 images in CS4 and CS4 Bridge?
I have downloaded the latest Camera Raw version but this has not helped. If I click on the thumbnail I get a preview at the bottom of the page but it takes so long to go through all the photos to find the one I want to work on!! Opening the file once located is no problem and I can see the photo in ACR.
Any advice (simply put please) would be appreciated.

Breezebrowser Pro is one of the very best programs IMHO for viewing Raw files, or any other type of image file for that matter.
There is a trial version available for download.

Do you mean that, when you have downloaded the images and opened them in Bridge, the CR2 thumbnails only appear as icons? If so I have the same problem. Now, whenever I use RAW, I select RAW + small jpeg on the camera and use the jpeg thumbnail as a reference when opened in Bridge. Shouldn't have to do it that way but I've never managed to solve the problem.

If you only get icons, it may be that you have a cache from a previous version of RAW that has not been cleared.

I'm on CS3, but when I downloaded an .8BI file to get the latest camera support, only icons appeared thereafter and it was slow to open the files in Bridge.

The answer lies on the Adobe website - sorry to be unspecific: this was 6 months ago - but find the blurb (I think its after the bit that tells you which .8BI file is the one you need for which version of camera raw), clear the cache and all works fine and very quickly on a rather slow computer. Whether that solves the original problem in CS4 I don't know, but slow functioning could easily be cache related.

If its working OK but slowly, before getting too worried, I think it might be worth defragmenting the hard drive? Some of these raw files are quite large, and can get spread all over the place. Disabling the anti virus (after disconnecting from the internet) also speeds the machine up a fair bit.

I am trying to upload my images into Bridge from the memory card in a slot on my computer. Looking at a new book by Scott Kelby about using CS4 and Bridge CS4 he is able to see the images immediately and then only uploads what images he wants from the card. This is what I would like to do.

I will have a look on the Adobe site and see about purging the cache but it sounds rather technical to me!!

I did recently defrag my computer and it is quite speedy so sure that is not the problem.

Glenn - thankyou, and that also fixes the icons only problem. That's not where I got the solution from BTW - there was on the download page a "if you get this problem this is what to do" bit. However the fix is the same and it is that simple.

Sundari - that was not made clear in the original post. That's not a problem I have because I always download through Canons software.

As to the question of previewing, with the card out of the camera and in a computer reading slot, all you'd have to do is tell Bridge to look at the card as if it were another drive. The pics may not show up directly because there are a couple of folder levels to drop down to get at the pix, but you should just go to "My computer" in the Bridge panel, and navigate to the drive, and then down to the pix, when they show up as if they were in any other folder, DVD or whatever. Then you just copy them over as if you were copying from any other drive to any other folder. However, CS4 Bridge may be different and may recognise a camera card as that in a computer drive.

I have just checked - you can put the card in its special holder, and insert it into a USB port. Then go to Bridge - file - get photos. When the dialog appears, click on "Select a Device" and then select your card. (Mine comes up H/EOS) Your pix will come up all previewed as thumbnails, RAWs and all. If your card doesn't appear, click on "refresh list"

Yes, purging the cache won't work if you're editing straight from the memory card, as the thumbnails are all being constructed from new anyway.

One thing you could try is to make sure "Quick Thumbnails" is selected in Bridge preferences, which digs the embedded JPEGS straight out of the RAW file for speed.

Getting Bridge to work with memory cards was always a frustrating experience for me - albeit with a USB reader. I gave up with that, and just transfer everything to the 'C' Drive and then edit.

I THINK I may have found the problem but dork that I am I have not been able to sort it by myself!!
In Photoshop I show that I am using Camera Raw 5.4 but in Bridge I am still showing 5.0
I have, through Bridge , clicked on updates and it went through the process but the Camer Raw version is still 5.0 !!!
Please can someone enlighten me as to what I do next.!! I am sure it is quite simple for you experts but not for an olden like me who is worried she is going to mess up the whole programme!!

Automatic updates from within PS or Bridge have always seemed a bit unreliable to me. I'd advise starting up Bridge again just to make sure it didn't update (usually you have to re-start programs to see the change).

Assuming it didn't work - try going to this page and installing the ACR 5.4 update manually.

No you won't mess up the programme. If you do something really dire, you just re-install from disk.

Well looking at mine, which is the right one for my EOS 450, I have 4.5.175 in both Bridge and Photoshop. I don't quite understand how you have different version numbers when as far as I know - but you will need to check this - there is only one camera raw plug in for both programs. The two programs should call up the same plug in/subroutine which is a so called .8BI file. I would go to the Adobe website and check the version no you should have, and which directory it should be in. Go to that directory on your computer and check that for some reason you don't have 2 .8BI files in there. If you do, you will need to delete the wrong (older) one, and then restart CS, because it reads plug-ins on start up.

However, I wouldn't worry about the Kelby way to read RAWS and delete off small previews. As Glenn has said, its a better bet to download through the cameras software(if possibly a touch slower), then look at them at a reasonable size in Bridge and delete from there. The end result will be the right pix deleted, but the decision making process will be more informative.

To purge the cache open Bridge, then edit on the top line, then camera raw preferences (at the bottom of the edit menu.) A panel comes out and there is a purge cache button. Click on it - job done.

Yes, I use that also. If you just want to view RAW files, there are lots of free programmes without paying for it. PhotoScape is another I use, RAW converter, colour picker, screen capture, editor etc, all thrown in for free.
