Did anybody else watch the BBC Breakfast interview of Amatuer Photographer news editor, Mr Chris Cheeseman, concerning photographers' rights?

Mr Cheeseman was accompanied by AmTog Phil Kelly who was notoriously stopped by a poorly informed PCSO in Blackpool (reported by AP on 14/02/08).

Did anyone else feel that Charlie Speight and Suzanna Reid missed the point?

Could the BBC have made more of the chance to explain and explore the entitlements of honest Joe and Jane to take photo's in public?

I don't think they did. Rather they seemed to me to add to the growing hysteria of the general public at large by repeatidly mentioning 'terrorists' and 'peadophiles' in the same sentance as 'amatuer photographers'!

I for one am thoroughly annoyed that they both were quite dismissive and patronising of Mr Kelly's general point, that he was doing nothing wrong!

The BBC interview sure seemed subliminally unbalanced to me!

Rant over. Happy snapping! Warm regards, Iain.

BBC breakfast news and missing the point is an oft heard phrase.

Its an advert for the bbc schedule, old boys and the odd hard news item turned into a mockery of broadcast journalism, Edward R. Murrow would choke if he saw it.

BBC1 am news is becoming a joke. Hardly any news of substance and sports sports sports with the weather playing a large part. All too PC, friendly, smiley and as you say jobs for the boys (and girls)

Yes I saw it and agree with the comments. But they have a tight schedule to meet and are addressing an audience of the general public, not just togs.

At least they aired it !

It sometimes seems that from a news aspect the BBC has all but climbed into bed with the tabloids. Maybe not what Auntie would want but when the battle for ratings commences, where d'you draw the line?

I thought that the BBC was supposed to be a public service ('due to the unique way in which we are funded... blah, blah, blah') not concerned with a ratings war.

Hmm... I suspect the BBC's funding partly depends, these days, on ratings. So the ratings war matters all too much to them. Unfortunately.

Perhaps an annual event like the Pin Hole camera day is required.
An annual Street Photography day to give. With hundreds on the street snapping away we would not need to depend on the Beeb to publicise our rights.

I did not see this as i always watch the Anglia news but it is getting to the point where we have to stand up for our selves and fight back, Tripods at the ready. Wink But seriously if we were terrorists or peadophiles we would have the smallest cameras going we wouldnt take 10 minutes setting up for one shot where has the common sense gone

The thing is, that is just as daft.

How can owning a SLR, big lens and tripod mean you are not a terrorist or paedophile?

Or, using common sense, if you were a terrorist who would be arrested for using covert cameras which gave inferior pictures but would be freely allowed to take high resolution shots using a SLR on a tripod, which would you use?

Luckily the main story is about the authorities being properly aware of what they can and can't do, which hopefully is a good thing.
