Just watched my tripod topple into the stream at Desolatyion valley..... with a Canon 10D on it.

    Hmmm

Was in there for about 5-10 seconds, got a little damp to say the least.

Anyone got any tips or rays of hope for such water damage?

Anyone had problems claiming off their insurance for such damage?

The most annoying thing was that we'd endured lots of snow and horrible weather and it was just coming good when it fell in! Missed some class shots there!!!

Focus tomorrow - looks like a new body may be in order. 30D or 5D?

Whip both batteries out, if you haven't already, then bung it in the airing cupboard for a few days or more.
From your description, I assume it was fresh water so you may be lucky.

When I went for a swim with my 300D, I took the battery, cf card and lens cap off - left everything to dry and its worked fine ever since. That was 18 months ago.
Luckily, like you, it was fresh water. I'd give it a try... I was rather impressed with the robustness of the camera...
(I was in the river, sorry, the camera was in the river for about the same length of time).

    Hope this helps.

    Jeanie

ps; I was able to use the camera a few hours later.... I was doing rather a long walk at the time and was determined (ok - stubborn as a mule) that I was not going to turn back as I was only into an hour of an overall 9 hour walk.

Some hope there then - there is water inside the lens though, can see it's all foggy in there and bits of water running around.

I think I'll do the airing cupboard thing though.

Still - I reckon If it wasn't to get better, I may get at least a 20D as a replacement - if not a 30D, so could be a blessing in disguise.... well that's what the people with me said - I wasn't to amused by it all!

Could be worse Ade, I went to the cloughs a few weeks ago, but it was me that fell in got soaked in freezing cold water from the waist down, dislocated my finger and spent 3 hours in Tameside Hospital. Luckily my gear was still in the backpack not a drop got near.
Trying to find the small print in the policy where I claim for fingers Lol..

ooh - that does sound painful Ed!

Thing is, I was just getting a filter out of the bag and heard a splash!

the camera must have caught in the breeze or something as it had been stood there for 2 minutes at least.

Think I may get a more sturdy pair of tripod legs - for manfrotto 190's with that joystick head on. All a bit top heavy and they do tend to be a wee bit unstable.

I'm going to be brave and try to barter for 5D and 17-40 at Focus tomorrow Smile

    reckon 2000 is too cheeky?

    A moment's silence Please

I put a newly charged battery in the 10D this morning (he was looking dry) and nothing happened.

Lets see what Mr Esure has to say tonight.

The 10D is dead, long live the 5D!

    R.I.P., 10D...

    My sympathies,

    Conrad

Don't give up on it, place it in the airing cupboard for a few days (with the body open, i.e. no body cap). I had a film compact which was soaked while lightweight camping during a very heavy thunderstorm. I was on tour (cycling) and four days later it started working again. It still works after several years.

Edit: Sorry Chris, only just noticed your post. That makes two of us with the same experience.
