Having just got a digital camera, really wanted to have a go at a 'water drop' - eughhh I hear you say.

However, I nearly got my comeupance as my desk lamp (on hinges) fell into the bowl of water, and me being rather silly dived in after it (still plugged in!!). Luckily I have no hair that could have stood on end.

Anyway, whats the general set up for this if you don't have flash units etc? I have a mixing bowl, and a built in flash on a D20! - its not going to happen is it? Especially if I electrocute myself in the process....

    The things you do!

It will not happen unless you use flash really, there is a bit in the technique section, http://www.ephotozine.co.uk/techniques/viewtechnique.cfm?recid=172

You can use laser beams to trip the flash light or you can guess but it will be a lot more hit and miss that way mostly miss but you can get some spot on by guesing.

    Hiya Chris

Thanks for the link - had a look at that earlier - bit more of a setup than I can be bothered with at the moment.

Much harder than it looks though isn't it!

What do people use to get the perfect drop?!

    All good fun...

If you have a canon flashgun you can get good results by using a very high shutter speed and the flashgun on on High Sync.

You would need to set the camera to manaul and focus to manual.

For some that I had experimented with, I just timed it by sight. A little tricky and obviously nowhere near consistent but you can get some interesting results anyway for fun.

The ones I did were outside in the pool with a raindrop failling 30 feet off the corner of my house. Far from optimial environment, but some still turned out better than I had really expected.

If you get good you could swap the water in the bowl for milk, then drop a tiny droplet of ink for the splash.

You need to set the bowl up, fasten your flash at 45 degrees to the camera, focus....then go down the pub and give yourself a pat on the back for not even bothering.

and then you'll be a photographer my son.

Water? Why not guinness or cafferys or some real ale.

    Go on, be original.

(At least you get to drink it after sitting for hours in the dark).

I've never taken a water droplet photo in my life.

    Guiness, Joe? Drinking it afterward.

And all this time you've made out your staggering was due to a gammy leg!

(Seriously, mate, I hope your leg is getting better)
