.. and there used to be a 4% additional levy. Don't know if that still applies. There's a list somewhere on the Customs & Excise site (as was! Can't get used to their new name!!)
As I understand it, it's only a lens or complete camera (SLR + Lens) that incurs duty. Camera bodies are exempt. The digital cameras listed will refer to compacts.

What it says is:
Digital, still - free
Film Camera - 35mm SLR - 4.9%
Camera lenses - 6.7%
Just wondered whhere a digital SLR would fit and what the overall rationale was (if there is one)
couldn't find a good description of why SLRs are treated differently, but the linked article from AP magazine seems to hit the right notes
Digital still cameras - currently exempt from import duty because they are classed as information technology products
