I have been doing outdoor/natural lighting photography and have recently decided to convert a room in my house to a small studio. What equipment will I need? Is there equipment that I can get that I can easily transport and use for my outdoor photography? I do mostly families, children, newborns...
Thank you!!
A few items that might be on a studio shopping list.
A background support system, Consists of 2 telescopic stands ( similar to lighting stands ) and a telescopic cross bar.
Background materials for use with above, Can be cloth type, Paper type, Or the more expensive, But more durable Vinyl type.
For small projects ( not full length etc ) You can get away with " Pop Up " backgrounds, They come in many sizes, Colours, Flavours etc etc.
2 or 3 reflectors, with one at least 1 metre in diameter, Add something to hold them in place if you do not have an assistant to hand....![]()
All of the abobe can be bought in types that fold down into carry bags for easy transport.
Next up is the actual studio lighting, Called " Flash Heads " by some, Strobes by others, Whatever....![]()
A 2 head set is a good start, These can be bought as kits that include the stands, Softboxes ( or Brollies ) + all the bits you need to run them.
However most are " Mains Powered " IF your looking for something that does not rely on mains, Your going to be looking at the more expensive
kits, As these need very expensive power packs.
Brands worth considering are Elemental, Bowens, Interfit etc etc, Many people on this site have bought " Elemental " and they make very favourable
comments regarding the kit, As well as the company who supply them, As a by the way, The Guy who runs " Elemental " ( Danny James ) is an ePHOTOzine

Personally if your just starting out in studio work, I would go with a mains set up, Then progress onto using the studio lighting in outdoor situations, As and
when you have mastered the studio lighting in a studio situation first......![]()
Its not just a case of placing one strobe to the right and one to the left, There is a little more to it than that......![]()
AS with the background stuff, Most if not all lighting kits come in easy to carry bags, So location work is no problem....Apart from the mains or no mains issue.
Well it depends on what kind of money you want to spend, also what kind of lighting you want. I recommend Westcott products because I believe they are the best and you really get great product and great quality! Hope this helps! Good luck shooting! ![]()
