My husband wants to buy me a DSLR for christmas (lucky me!) and I am starting a photography course in Jan. I like to take portrait and architecture pictures most.
Would a Nikon D50 be good? or can you suggest anything else?

    Kind regards in advance.

i go for canon so would recommend a used eos 10d or a 20d both have more options fro manual controls etc and added creativity and would be a better option for long term ownership

Depends upon your budget, but I'd agree with Paul.

Most of the digitals will be fine. Depending on how much he is going to spend depends on what kit you will end up with.

Nikon kit lens is good enough where as the Canon kit lens is not so hot.

The new 8mp Olympus E500 gets good write up and the kit price is very reasonable for what you get. 2 lenses plus body for 600. The lenses take you from 14 to 150mm (in effect 28 to 300mm) all you will need for a start. The lenses are good quality optically from what reviews I have seen.

Don't forget you will need at least a 1mb memory card, preferably two.

Well, two options really. One, get a DSLR around 400-500 and spend the rest getting other kits, like lens, memory card. Two, get a more expensive DSLR.

Cheaper DSLR(but good): Konica Minolta 5D, Canon 350D, Nikon D50 and Olympus E500

More expensive(a bit out of your budget, really): Canon 20D, Nikon D70S.

*personally, I would suggest Konica Minolta 5D or maybe the new Olympus E500.

id probably recommend the canon 350d, it'll give you silky smooth images at iso 100. use all the funds on your budget on good lens too.

    canon 350D, preferably a 20D budget permitting.

I spent the best part of 2 years contemplating the same question - i.e. basically which system to invest in, because once you've got a few lenses you're locked in. I decided on Minolta and got the 5D. The system has all the lenses I need and the in-body AS means they're all image stabilised. It's also one of the best cameras ergonomically. You don't have to hunt through menus and it's very intuitive to use, unlike Canon. The tie-up between KM and Sony means that they should be around for the long term also. I discounted the Olympus range because there's no image stabilisation.

I agree...go for the KM 5D. I am currently saving for one
seems to be getting good reviws everywhere even against the 350D

theres a great deal on pixmaina at the mo

    KONICA MINOLTA Dynax 5D + 18-70mm AF + 75-300mm AF + 512 Mb CompactFlash....all for 600

    Not bad at all

Oh no, after so many people complaining about Pixmania here, you still recommend it. But well, since you are new, you are forgivenWink

You would be able to get the KM 5D from Jessops/warehouse express with 18-70mm lens for around 460-470, I think.

Well, with the D50 body going for 398 on the EPZ shop, that would leave you upto 302 for a lense/card. Seems logical if budget is strict.
