What is a 1A filter used for.

I have a SUNPAK 1A filter and a Marumi MC 1B filter and I have no idear what they are used for.
Forgive my ignorance, but can anyone let me know what they are supposed to be used for.

Thanks for the links, and your help with the filters.
Sunpak do make filters, I got them from ebay in the states and they are Solid Optical Glass Filters made in Japan
All Sunpak filters are mounted in black anodized aluminum rings.
