Anyone seen any rumours on the update to the Canon G10. Will the G11 finally come with a larger sensor for better quality rather than squeezing more pixels onto a thumbnail size sensor?

I wait for the day I can have a pocket size digital compact that will give me the quality that my old Olympus XA did.

Sigma DP1 and 2 possibly the closest yet. Any thoughts?

This is a sector of the market that I'm really interested in myself.
Most people regard it as a back-up or a second rate carry around camera but personally, if I could get the right quality, this would be where I would invest as my main camera for the future.
The progress seems to have been slow compared to the DSLR market but it's there all the same.
I printed a few prints today from my LX3 for the first time and I'm impressed, I only have an A4 printer so I cropped to half a frame and the quality is quite impressive ....I would think this suggests good A3 prints straight from camera.
As an ex- Olympus XA owner myself, much as I like to harp back to what an excellent camera it was, these prints from the LX3 suggest it's just as good if not better.
From what I've seen, the DP2 is better still.
....and the Panasonic G1 even better (although not as compact)

What I'd like to see is a 4/3 interchangeable lens system where I could own two bodies, one a compact similar in size to the LX3 and another like the G1. A selection of lenses to fit both including a compact 50mm equivilent fast lens and I'd be a happy man.

...don't want much do I? Smile ...it'll come

I think the biggest problem this sector of the market has is shutter lag - if compacts did not have such a long lag (even the high end ones) they would sore in popularity. However I get the feeling that they advance slow delibratly so as to defend DSLR sales - especaily now as more and more parents are shelling out on a "pro" camera (entry level) and a few budget lenses to get that instand shot and better image quality (debatable I am sure but that is what these people thing of the bigger cameras when compared to the smaller).

Until the manufacturers lower the defence on other lines and allow the compacts to open up more it will remain a hobbled market I feel - though newer companies joning the game might very well push the standard up faster as they might have less/no higher level cameras to defend.

shutter lag from a GRD II 0.08sec in snap or manual focus mode, just takes a bit of learning to control, however as most of the controls are very similar to a DSLR, it doesn't take too long to learn.

My DP1 is better than my old Olly XA, and the image quality absolutely kills the G1. Using manual focus there is mo shutter lag, but as riprap says the ergonomics of the Ricohs are superb.

At the moment I'm holding off on a DP2 just to see what Olympus is going to offer in the micro 4/3 format.

Well according to Olympus website we will not have to wait too much longer. The new micro 4/3rds camera is due in the summer. I am looking forward to seeing what they produce as the prototype camers they showcased earlier in the year looked like they might provide what I am looking for.

If Canon could pruduce the G10 with DP1 image quality then I would be content.

Looking forward to seeing what olympus comes up with, for me the G9/G10 does not cut the mustard the sensors simply too small.

In the sixties/seventies Canon and Olympus made some great fixed lens RF`s.

Would love to see a digital equivalent of something like the old Olympus 35 RC or SP.

I'm more of the persuasian.........If Ricoh can produce a GX model with a large sensor or Sigma add Ricoh ergonomics, because it has to fit in my pocket (which the DP1 does).

This is supposed to be the first sneaky pics of the new Olympus E-P1 micro 4/3 camera here and here !

Also a composition pic of it with the DLUX4, DP2, and G10 here. I'm not sure how true to scale it is though?

I must admit that I like the look of it, though not the expected price tag of around $1000 US. I also wonder if they are going to equip it with viewfinders of any sort, otherwise it's an arms out job!

I'll still refrain from getting a DP2 until I've had a chance to look at it, though it'll really have to go some beat the Foveon IQ.

Keeping the pixel count to a realistic level for the sensor size instead of trying to produce 'quality' by increasing pixels will make better compacts.

I thought we'd moved on to discussing compacts with APS-C sensors? Agree with limiting pixel count as a marketing tool though.
