Hopefully stop people giving false details and wasting police time, therefore costing the tax payer.

Only if you are already on the national criminal database, having had your fingerprints taken before for some offence!!

N.B. It is not compulsory to give your fingerprint in the street at this time, the police can only "ask nicely" Personally, I would think twice before being a good citizen and offering to comply as the probability is that your fingerprint will be stored somewhere that could come back to bite you later.

hmm, so the police are going to try stopping speeding mortorists again now? I thought the current procedure was to sit back, take and take a photo...

I heard it on the news this morning, they did say though that if you refuse to have your prints taken you can be arrested. I wish I could believe what I hear in the news, just one reliable source with the right information would be good.

What a shame they do not use the same vigour when called to other crimes.

I agree K... It appears that you have to consent to having your prints taken in this situation.

If true, it makes it yet one further, laughable situation for the motorist.

True, but there will be savings as it would pick up on previous offenders who are more likely to give false details I would have thought.

I'm with the "give heroin to junkies" policy.

the reason it's "SUCH" a problem is that it's illegal. Heav users need £300-£1000 per day to fund their habit (according to a radio 4 documentary last week with, of all people, Monty Don).

To raise that kind of money on a daily basis involves a huge amount of crime.

the gear they get is always cut to hell by dealers, this causes the gangrene, strokes etc. as they have brick dust in their veins!!! Clean, controlled heroin has none of these risks. This means the cost of treating them on the nhs PLUMMETS.

There's 2 good financial reasons to do it

Now that does not say that being on junk in the first place is good, before you all pounce! There's a bigger moral debate to be had, but from a pure cost/benefit analysis, it'd be far far cheaper to just give them the stuff and be done with it

Lol, the idea to give heroin to addicts has come from Nottinghamshire Police's Deputy Chief...nothing to do with the fact they've admitted they can't tackle the crime in the county. I guess this is their idea of reducing crime.

Pathetic, just like the guy who sued the government for making him go cold turkey when he went to prison. That was a farce as well.

As for finger printing...no idea how that's going to stop speeding, or save them £2m a year. If the savings are about catching people who have given them a false name, well that only works if your finger prints are on the system in the first place. Otherwise I can't see any point for it.

If they can do roadside fingerprinting - why do we need ID cards ????

Because if they bring in ID cards then EVERYONE will be on the database.

they don't keep the scanned finger prints - they purge them each night AND you have the right to aske them to delete them there and then.

was an interview with the bloke up made it on Today this morning
