    I'm in a dilemma ... I already have a 1Ds and a 20D and I'm looking to move on to newer/better models ...

... Do I sell the 20D and get a new 5D and keep the 1Ds ... or sell the 1Ds and buy a 1Ds mk II instead and keep the 20D?
... both options will cost me the same amount of extra money (ish) depending on how much I can sell the 1Ds for (I was thinking about 2,200)
    - does anyone have an opinion on which way to go, or want to buy a camera?

why not just keep the 1Ds ?? Does it let you down? Are the files not big enough, or clean enough? have any of your clients complained about the files ??

Wait 6 months and get the 1DsII N or a 1DsII as the price will drop with the introduction of the N . . .

I guess you've got to weigh up full frame v crop, ISO and frame rate.

Do you really think it will improve your photography to get the latest models of camera?

If so I think we'd be genuinely interested to know why. Smile

    Oh, oh...

er, not really - apart from higher image quality, lower noise levels, wi fi image transfer etc.
but thats not the point - you could argue that an aston martin DB9 won't do anything other than get you from A-B ... just like a mini metro will, but it doesn't mean you don't want one!

The trouble is that s/h value of cameras is so low. They lose about a half to 2/3rds of their value the day they are bought.

I'd love a 5D! have the 20D at pres and it would be nice if my 18-200mm lens behaved like one, instead of acting like a 28-320mm because of the 1.6x effect due to the smaller sensor in the 20D! I reckon that's reason enough!

CB - I think you're getting Cameras and Cars confused. New 20d's go for 900 + 100 cash back, 2nd hand ones are going for 700 on ebay.

Don't be such a tightwad, CB! Wink You can afford it! You can't take it with you! I think my 10D cost me around 1,200, and I would probably get a few hundred quid now, if I was lucky! If I got absolutely nothing, I still would not regret a penny of it, it's given me no end of pleasure, plus it's sold me quite a lot of photographs. I will look at the 5D in the same way, if I lose 2,000+ in a couple years, so be it. I only wish I could lose that little on the car.

I think you would find that lens is totally useless on a 5D it's not designed to work on full frame sensors

I've been wondering the same thing. My issue is that I have the money to do the upgrade just once, now. I currently own a 20D & wish to make the change to either the 1Ds MK II or settle for the 5D (would that be settling?). Right now I'm doing weddings, events & staff shots for our church, & portaiture, but I really want to get into fine art landscapes. (I do not own any EF-S lenses.) I've been doing some landscape stuff but want better resolution than I've been getting. I want potential image quality that jumps out & bites you. (I know, a lot of it's my responsibility for the quality & such. But I want more from my camera & gear.)

Which would serve those purposes best? The 1Ds MK II or the 5D???

Again, I can purchase either one but only once with no upgrades for awhile. At least not till the camera is able to pay for itself from jobs & I'm still in the beginning phase of that. Thanks for any input.

Can't imagine why anyone would pay 700 for a s/h one, when you can have a new one for 800! But they do! Wink

Thanks for that Cambirder. I was just trying to get the point across that smaller sensor cameras don't behave as the numbers on the lens would suggest. I know my Tamron is aimed exclusively at cameras with smaller than full frame sensors.
