I don't know about anyone else, or whether its just me, but the galleries are becoming full of images that well, just look the same - how many seascapes are there in the galleries at the moment?

I have spent less and less time on EPZ of late because very little inspires me in the galleries, for example you have to get to page 4 of the readers choice pics (set to 40 per page!) before the first mono appears. Has everyone given up posting their more experimental images in favour of more EPZ friendly material ? I know in the past I have been guilty of this.

I think it's volume; there appears many more people uploading, the experimental is here, just thinner on the ground in comparison to the majority

It's not just here, those bloody sunset seascapes are popping up everywhere! Nice though some of them are, I am a little tired of seeing the formulaic dark rocks and purple/orange sky combo

I agree with you. There seems to be very little imagination displayed by some of the more capable photographers on the site as they just seem to copy what is popular with others and is in vogue.

I realise that it is not easy to come up with stunning landscapes, for instance, but so many that are posted appear to be very similar and the tripod holes must be getting quite deep by now.

For similar reasons to yourself, I too do not post at the moment but I still look in occasionally to see if there is anything worth viewing.

I have a fear of pointing out a lack of diversity or imagination lest anyone correctly points the finger back at me.

For many people starting out emulating a style or a look is a great way of learning, the harder bit is putting your own style into it.

I couldn't agree more John, I have done it, we all have to a degree, but I often use it as part of the learning curve - whether trying something new in the processing or when out at a popular location get the main shot I'm after then look for a different perspective - although I must admit a lot of these sit on the hard drive or uploaded elsewhere. I only started to upload some of my other stuff occasionally after encouragement from someone on here (I won't embarrass him).

I try and be diverse as much as possible, I usually try and make every shot I post different from what I have done before. I can't say everything I do is different from what others have done though because I don't get to see everyones uploads.
When I do post my experimental shots, sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised by the reception they get ....but more often than not, I'm disappointed by the lack of views and votes they get. I still try and look for something new and different whenever I can but they don't often get seen by anyone other than me!

Nick, It may just be the case that the shots you mention are fairly safe bets for getting votes? Seems to be what it's all about for many.

    I haven't done a seascape in ages.

Its not that I don't like seascapes - I do and if I remember Kris you have a couple of belters (I think I gave my award to one - I will have to check) its just there is a glut of them at the moment - I guess in a couple of weeks we will get all the autumnal water with stones in it ones (I may do a few myself), what i was having my little moan at is that were not getting the diversity we were.

When I check someones PF (particularly someone I admire) I look at their awards - its there where I often stumble upon some of the more innovative stuff.

Same here although the occasional view runs the risk of missing the few with that something else.

Nick, have you considered putting up diverse pics yourself, to encourage others to do the same? Not having a go, I really like you work but it falls into the popular category you're saying uninspires you. One way to break out is to join the new buddy challenges that we've added this encourages more challenging photography.

I do still see a fair percentage of diverse images and feel some of this diversity is represented in the HCs ECs choice.

    Cheers Nick.

I know what you mean 'tho. I too am a bit jaded by the endless rock, sea, dawn/sunset; almost a case of been there, done that BUT, a lot of new togs haven't so I see no problem with them having a go. As for you old hands though....Wink

I live in Dorset and everybody instantly thinks, 'oooooh you've got that wonderful Jurassic Coast to photograph.' True, but Dorset has almost an overload of stunning inland locations too, which most people tend to either forget or never bother seeing, as the coast tends to overshadow them.

Within just one square mile of where I live there are, by my reckoning, at least a dozen decent landscape photographs waiting to be made. I just need the right light, weather, time of year combination to get 'em, hence I don't upload anywhere near the amount of photographs that I used to. I'm waiting.....

I have always try to do different things myself.
But different to me might not be different to the gallery as a whole.
