the only downside of the olympus system that I can see is that their longest lens is a 300mm f2.8, which if it is anything like the canon and nikon equivalents should work fantastically with a 1.4 teleconverter and acceptably well with a 2* teleconverter.
Past that lens you would have to look to 3rd party groups for longer glass (sigma make a range).
The 300mm f2.8 should see you in good footing for sports and horseriding and such - its fast and a decent focal length. A 1.4TC would give you a good 420mm lens as well. A decent solid tripod and ballhead would also help a lot with stability and avoiding handshake and also be a great help if your sitting in one spot all day (say viewing sports)

Doesn't that equate to 600mm in the 4/3rd system?
And to complete the comparison, the 300 f2.8 costs @ £4,600 so its not a trivial investment. a Canon 400 f2.8 comes with IS and only costs a little more. So a 4/3 SLR and a crop Canon SLR system should cost about the same and both are f2.8 and approximatley the same effective angle of view. There are lower cost options in the Canon/Nikon range.
The Nikon lens is about £400 more.
I guess the question is budget and lenses based. For an Oly shooter the E500 series might be better as you get in-camera IS, or the E3 is out there.
Quote: which is the best alround camera
Nikon D3 with the following lenses:
24-70 f2.8 'N'
70-200 f2.8 'G'
300 or 400 f2.8 'N'
1.4 and 2x TC's
Well.... you didn't specify a price range.
Even though I am a canon user and am very happy with my kit and MKIII bodies but if I had all my kit nicked tomorrow I would probably go and buy D3's.
Depends on the budget, for quality as Sam says (or D700 for better value, same sensor etc), if you are on a more limited budget something like the Nikon D300 or Canon 50D with something like the Sigma 120-300 EX F2.8 (or 100-300 EX F4, 80-400VR). The crop sensor will give more reach, and any of the Sigma EX's mentioned should be OK - I have the 100-300 and for my needs (non proffesional) its pretty good tho the 120-300 which I have used is stunning.

The Olympus E3 will do the job, add the new 50-200 and its even better. Use an E3 myself, don`t own the new 50-200 though I`ve had a play and its fast. All my older lenses including the 40-150 seem to focus quicker on the E3.
The E3 viewfinder is a lot bigger, larger than the 40D and a little smaller than the D300`s. The bodies weather sealed and the in body IS that works a dream. Also the free FL50R flash offer is still on for purchases before December the 31st, mine arrived within about ten days of ordering.
