A work colleague goes to lots of concerts & would like to buy a compact camera that can take pictures of the stage. She wants something more than 3x.
Any suggestions please?

What sort of budget is available?

Also, don't confuse digital zoom with optical zoom. Optical zoom uses the lens elements and the full sensor area whereas digital zoom merely crops the image on the sensor which usually results in lower quality images.

Panasonic TZ7 has 12x optical zoom (300mm equivalent on a 35mm slr) and also records movies in HD should you fancy it.
I bought one yesterday and the movies mode is excellent.
It also has wide angle at the short end (25mm equivalent)

All for 250 odd

Yep - go for the Panny TZ7 - you won't be disappointed given your stated requirements. It is a very versatile camera.

I will add the Panasonic LX3 to the list that sits within your budget.

On the LX3 a 2.5x optical zoom is going to cause a problem at gig unless you are in the front row.
lovely specced camera other than that though

How can one person possibly know of all the hundreds of P & S cameras which one has the best zoom. It is obvious they are going to say the camera they own.

I've got the panasoniz TZ-5, which has a x10 optical zoom, plus extra x6 on digital. Been very impressed with it, I believe the new model is now x12 optical.

No manual settings as such, but "scene modes" which once you suss them out are pretty useful.

You could buy the tele attachment for the LX3 and it won't loose it's fast aperture but it will cost about 200.
