I'm showing my inexperience by asking this question but we all have to learn sometime, but which is the better lens and why?

    Canon 100mm f/2 usm
    Canon 100mm f/2.8 usm (macro)

    Thanks in advance

    Peter

No, I mean what kind of photography do you want to use the lens for? If we don't know what you want to shoot with the lens, it's rather hard to give recommendations.

They are both very good lenses, if you don't anticipating doing any macro work then go for the f2 its more compact and has better AF. If on the other hand you want to do some close up stuff then go for the macro f2.8.

    Sorry

It would be for close up work

This review suggests maximum magnification of the f2 is 0.14 compared to 1:1 for the 2.8 but the reviewer does prefer the handling of the f2. It depends if you want 'close up' or 'macro', but I think the 2.8 will be the better one for you.

    Pick your compromises.

In that case the macro lens is the obvious choice, isn't it...

Thanks for all the comments and help

Have gone for the Canon 100mm f/2.8 usm £379 at simply electronics
    minus cashback at quidco
minus £14.00 because I spent over £650 on the lens and other things.
