Which len Sigma 50-150 or nikon 18-200?

I recently broke another lens, leaving me only with my 10-20 sigma. I mainly take landscape and general everyday shots and use a Nikon D80. I don’t really want to spend more than £550(ish) and this is realistically the only lens i will be able to afford to buy for the next year.

I was thinking about the Nikon 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 G AF-S DX VR Lens or the Sigma 50-150mm f2.8 EX DC II HSM Lens.

My concerns are that the 18-200 may not be fast and not sure how sharp it will be at 200, my concerns about the 50-150 are how much i may miss the 20-50 range.

I would like people views on which would be the best lens for me, if anyone has either len how do you rate it or is there another lens which will be better for me.

i have the 50-150, got it from focus in jan for about 430, its a good lens, but think it wouldnt really suit your needs due to the range, the f2.8 is fast and feels solid but heavy, tamron do a 18-270 mm lens if thats any better , G

I agree with Kevin, the Nikkor 16-85 VR is an excellent lens, sharper in my opinion than the 18-200 VR. The 18-200 has had a bit of bad press lately but I have to say I have had no problem with mine and find it a good versatile lens.

I had a bit of a play with a mates D300+ the nikon lens seems very good to me and focuses easily in low light

Like Sarah, I've had no issues with mine at all. It been a great lens and the range is great. I've only used this lens as my main lens (landscapes excluded) for the last couple of years and I've never had an issue once with it. The VR comes in quite handy too.

Only if there's space to walk backwards far enough to get what you want in the shot!

The 150-200 however, doesn't seem a lot, but certainly very handy.

Ok my 2p, of the 3 people I know who have the 18-200, two had to send it back within 6 months, and they no longer have it. One the dealer gave a cash refund on as it and camera went back for the 3rd time, the other was sold, but only after a battle to get Nikon to repair it.

Both think the 18-70 kit lens and 70-300 Vr lens from Nikon are better.

the 3rd person still uses it, but only when they are travelling light.

I would look at other Nikon lenses before that one. Optically the 18-200 did not look that special, but then super zooms are never going to be the best. Its not a disaster, but when you look at the price you have to wonder.

If you treat the 18-200 as an 18 - 180 then it is fine, makes for a good travel lens
