    Hi all,

I'm about to purchase a decent tripod and am thinking of the Manfrotto 055 or 090 series. I'm going to have a look at both but does anyone know the main differences between the two?
Any thoughts/comments appreciated. Also any recommendations for a decent head to suit?

    Cheers

Do you mean the 190 series? If so, the main difference is in size - the 055 are 35cm or so taller...with a consequent increase in weight.

The 055B Pro is a solid and very stable bit o' kit. Stability cannot be got from a lightweight tripod... Smile

    Thanks for the replies.
Yep I did meam the 190 series, as I'm a bit of a short arse I don't suppose 35cm of height difference would be much of a concern. Are these two comparable in stability, or is the 055 a more robust bit of kit?

    Hi All,

I am travelling to the Almalfie Coast next month and do not want to lug my main Manfrotto tripod (055MF4 Magfibre Pro) around with me. Can anyone recommend a solid tripod for travelling? My kit is Nikon D50 with kit wide and zoom lenses.

    Much abliged...

I would have thought the 055 MF4 would be the ideal choice for travelling - it's light, stable and rigid. Anything lighter would be like sitting your camera on a wet noodle...

Nothing wrong with the 190 series. It's a wee bit lighter than the 055, but sturdy and supports up to 5kg. Column can be flipped to horizontal if required. I've got the 190XPROB.

Get the 458B, its great Smile only a few quid more too. I can't stand those silly locking nuts.

I think I'm going to go for the 190XPROB as did you Doug. Now - any recommendations for a head to suit??

I went for the 804RC2 three-way head, Jamie. Both tripod and head have built-in spirit levels (so you can tell whether or not you're in high spirits?). There's a quick-release plate and the handgrips for adjusting the head are a good size - easy to grip and turn.

Have a look at the 055MF4, combined with the 322RC2 head. What fantastic pieces of equipment.

I am on the verge of buying the manfrotto 322rc2 head but what is the best compliment tripod, the 190xprob or the 3021bpro?

i need to get low down for macro stuff but also need to do landscape with it.

    p.s i can't afford the manfrotto 055!

Terry, if you search carefully online, 055pro black is only few pounds more expensive than 199pro.
this is one of those place you can find it.
    Buy once, buy wise.

btw, I am using 055pro black and 322 rc2. Brilliant combination and great for macro as well!

I have the 222 joystick head and the 322RC2 head.

I use the 322 for landscapes but for portrait work the 222 as it is more versatile and outmaneuvers the 322. Saying that,if you have a long, larger lens then the 322 is more sturdy.

Hope thats not too confusing....both are excellent.
