    Hi,

i used to be into landscape photography when I lived in scotland but since I moved to Cambridge a few years ago I sold my mamya 7 and bought and sold a canon 350 because I could not motivate myself to go out in what I consider a boring part of the contry (and it was too small for me). I can see how that sounds but having been spoilt by living 40 mins from Loch lomond and few hours from Skye its just not the same.

Anyway, I've got a big birthday coming up soon and I'm considering giving it another try. Somehow, i keep ending up back on ePhotozine, why is that ??!!??

So, if I'm gonna do this I think i'll do it right. Buy a Sigma 10-20mm lense for wide angle because I seen loads stunning photos on here taken with that lense. Buy a Hoya R72 ( I love b&w and esp IR), some grey grads, polarisor, warm-ups etc and a bloody good tripod. Then I need a body and that's the part I don't feel compelled to spend alot on (does that sound crazy?). Wifey has an Eos 300D which seems ok but I guess I'm looking for the digital slr verson of a MF or even LF camera - I don't care about focussing or speed just image quality. Am I making any sense at all - i'm really tired tonight.

Anyway, if you can see where I'm coming from with this rant what would you buy??

I know there must be good shots in my area and as I've done all the cliched shots in Scotland, Northumbria and the Lake district i like the idea of posting pictures that are taken in new locations (to the photographic community).

    Thanks for reading it all.

    Best wishes,

    David

Think you'd find it hard to beat a Mamiya 7...

......except that it would now be unnacceptable because I'd have to use film. It was a stunning camera though and I could walk far and wide with it in a big slr bag. Oh, happy days......

You'll find it hard to find a digital equivalent without spending tens of thousands on a digital back for a medium format camera. Dont believe those that tell you that top end '35mm' digital cameras have similar performance. They're very very good - but not that good.

The simple answer is that this week's AP suggests that the new 21 Mp Canon 1DS mk 111 has finally (but not totally) trumped medium format. I think you'll be needing a seat before you check out the current price. Sad

If you're thinking of spending thousands, you could always go for the Leica M8 and start with a couple of Voigtlander lenses.

If you have a spare 20 grand knocking around, get yourself a 39MP digital back and an MF SLR to strap it to. This beats your Mamiya hands down. A Canon 1ds comes close, though.

Or a Blad H3DII...1Ds doesn't come close though.

Photo mags are always making that kind of annuoncement about the latest toy... Many said similar things about the D2X when that came out. I even heard one review claim the D2X trumped 5x4 which is plainly ridiculous. But it sells journalist copy. For a more level headed analysis check out the critical BJP review of the Canon discussed in the Sony thread.

Cameras using 35mm lenses are not going to surpass cameras with sharp MF lenses like the Mamiya 7 in the near future.

How about trying a Canon 5D or a Nikon D3 (or D300)? Either will give you stunning results and I believe the D3 trumps the 5D on noise control. If full frame isn't imperative the D300 is getting impressive reviews.

I will try and give you a serious answer. What sort of money are you looking to spend- If your wife has a 300D I would buy a canon so you can share lenses. If you go for the Sigma 10-20 lens you would be limited yo a crop sensor SLR such as EOS 20D, 30D etc. The 40D has not long come on to the market but I would think you could still get a 30D for a good price. I have one and i am very pleased with it. There are alternatives such as 350D or 400D plus the new 450D. I did have a 350D for a year but was persuaded to change to the 30D by the better construction and general handling- the 350D is a bit on the small side. Hope that helps a bit.

Thanks, I'm not sure if the D3 is realistic in terms of price. I like the look of the Nikons (loved my old FM2) and I want something that feels solid and will fill the hand. Could be a good bet so i'll pop off to that well known auction site now.

    cheers,

    David

....I'm back from the Bay now and those camera's are mighty expensive. Anybody recommend something a little less pricey???
