I have just let my subscription to Outdoor Photography lapse as I thought it was becoming a bit stale - one months pics looked pretty much like the next. I also subscribe to Amateur photography but find the adverts (60 pages out of 100 in the latest issue) annoying - especially when I dont have money for any more new kit! I am also fed up with the endless 'digital vs traditional' debate and 'leica vs all the rest' debate(?) in the letters page. So I was wondering what everyoune else read and why? Do we need magazines when we have
e-photozine and the internet at our finger tips?
All the best,
Andy
P.S. Pete, I think this is a'letter of the week' kind of posting - can I have a t-shirt please!!!
Yes we do need magazines even though e-photozine is so good.A 17'' screen makes a poor pillow, those of us without laptops need something to read in bed or on the train!!!!
I like Digital Photo because of their good photoshop lessons. Practical Photography and Photography Monthly also often end on the bedside table though I often think it would be better using the time reading magazines to actually get out there and take some photos! Often I think I will enter the competition this month. Each magazines reviews equipment and consmables in slightly different ways so swopping about a little gives a more balanced view of the photoworld.
But I do look at the pile of magazines holding up the bookshelf and think do I really need to buy so many.... saving trees... life laundry and all that!
Good Reading

I subscribe to Digital Photo and have done so for over a year now. The supplied CD alone is worth every penny with excellent video tutorials and a good selection of royalty free images (shortage of these in recent issues).
With top notch photographers and digi-artists such as Barrie Thomas, Gavin Hoey, David Rowley and Barry Beckham (EPZ member) contributing, this is the mag to go for if your interest is primarily digital.
Good reviews too, adverts account for about 25 to 30% of the pages, not too bad.
Photography monthly and its sister mag Total Digital Photographer hands down. I have a subscription with Practical Phototography which I am on the verge of cancelling down to its strong bias towards digital photography.
You only have to check out the contributors in Photography Monthly to realise its strength. It even includes ePhotozine's Peter Bargh.
I subscribe to PP, Outdoor Photography, Photography Monthly, and EOS Magazine. I'm also a regular reader of Digital Photographer as it's the only digital magazine that doesn't seem to aimed at masses, but is targeted to those who are serious amateurs and professionals.
PP has improved of late, it went through a not-so-good spell and I gave it a rest for a while.
I'm a fan of Dan Lezano, so Photography Monthly is a 'must read'. I met him at RAF Cosford last year and he's a very nice bloke.
Outdoor Photography is good if you're into nature/landscape - I took out an extra 2 year subscription before the price rise. I've paid a lot less than the cover price!
AP we buy if it looks interesting, but the ratio of ads to info make it poor value for money.
The main digital magazine bore me slightly - so many camera reviews due to the short product life of digital cameras. I do buy occasionally to fill time on a rainy day or on a longer journey.

Yes, there will always be a need for a printed magazine for those early mornings in a field waiting for the sun to hit the right spot. Also, my toilet isn't internet ready (yet), so what would I read in the smallest room?
I get EOS Magazine, the BFP Newsletter and the BFP-associated Freelancer on subscription. I keep meaning to subscribe to Photography Monthly as I buy and read in most months as it is a very good all-rounder with a very strong team of contributors (Bjorn rocks!). I check out the competition pages on Practical Photography and if something catches my eye, I buy it (probably every other month of late). If I'm actively considering buying a piece of kit, I'll buy Amateur Photographer for the sake of the adverts. I'm tempted to subscribe to Outdoor Photographer at the moment as the subscription deal looks quite good and I enjoy the magazine when I do buy it (evry 2-3 months).
I have tried all of the digital titles as they've come out and, frankly, I find them all such a pile of cack that I don't bother with them. Digital Photo stood out from a fairly small crowd back in the days when it was called Digital Photo FX, but nowadays it treads the same ground as all the others. They all seem to go round in very small circles, showing the same handful of basic techniques for people that didn't bother to read their manuals, usually accompanied by examples that (possibly owing to deadline constraints) are amateurish, rather than inspirational.

Practical Photography is my favourite mag. I think they do a good job to keep the magazine fresh and interesting. It must be hard for magazine editors to try and find new articles and will be inevitable that the same things come around from time to time, but PP do it well.
I also get Photography Monthly every month, but I've been a bit disappointed with it since it underwent it's revamp.
I pick up Outdoor Photography and other digital mags from the newsagent when they look to have some interesting articles or if I've read the other two mags and it's still a couple of weeks away from the next issue.
Amateur Photographer drives me nuts with all the adverts! It's more adverts than articles.
Trouble is I think I spend more time at the moment reading the magazines than actually taking photos!
Funny how everyone has different tastes. I personally like Photography Monthly. It stands out as the best of the photography mags, IMHO. I think it's improved too since the revamp & the reviews are well done and very thorough.
I usually only buy Amatuer Photography when I want to trawl the adds as it's about the only thing worth buying it for.
As for Practical Photography I just feel it's too much of a large add for Canon and Jessops & is way too digitally oriented for my tastes, & I find their gear reviews odd. (Who tests budget range manual cameras and throw a budget autofocus camera in with the group?! PP, that's who)
ePhotozine is also very good & if you like to read on the train or in bed, then just print the articles off, that's what I do.
I subscribe to PP and I also buy Digital Photographer from time to time. It is expensive at a fiver a throw but the CD is normally pretty good.
We will always need magazines, in the same way we will always need newspapers. People absorb information in different ways through different mediums. The internet is a great source of information, but while it is 'free' to read these articles, sometimes you don't get the same satisfaction as you would when you buy a mag. Plus, people will always be attracted by freebies with mags!
