Different era:
Jimmy Chamberlain, Ex Smashing Pumpkins, now ZWAN
Stephen Perkins, Janes Addiction, Porno for Pyros, and back to Janes Addiction.
These are two who make Bonham (who was excellent by the way) look very ordinary.
Ginger Baker is still no slouch either, did you see his solo's in the Cream re-union gigs?
BOB
Buddy Rich.
I saw him do a 20 minute instrumental piece at Ronnie Scotts once.
Other - lesser - drummers might call it a solo
Mike Portnoy...
Incidentally, he's just had John Bonham's kit as used on Led Zep II reproduced and it now forms one half of his touring rig.
(The band is 'Dream Theatre' btw)
We had this thread once before.
John Bonham.
Nobody....that's nobody... had more of an effect and influence on rock drummers that came after him, even to this day. Bonham took rock drumming and rang it's throat until it squeeked and then began to play it like the devils fiddle. The man was and will always be - the best.
Forgive me if I'm out of order here, but is the only reason we know who's best drummer is because they used to indulge in tedious 15-20min drum solos that often took what appeared to be the whole side of an album. The bit for me that makes the Bonham one on Moby **** is when the music kicks back in. I bet there are other brilliant, but lesser know drummers who don't show off
BTW I'm not a fan of indulgent solos of guitar or keyboard either.
