Took some recent suggestions about removing the front element from a kit Canon 35-80 zoom lens, version III in this case, $30 on e-bay, which converts it into a manual focus only macro zoom, with a range of about .7x to 1.4x, but with full electronic functions. I cut off the front element from its holder, and re-attached the holder so that lens cap and macro ring mount can still be used. Very light weight and easy to use, with a WD of about 3-4 cm. Even at f/8, looks very good with little to no CA. Next time I'll keep my macro flash handy .
