I am a lover of digital but is it really good enough for high quality professional work.
I would say digital is about equal to 35mm for most types of photography at minor league pro and amateur level but it does not yet match the quality of medium and larger formats.
A3 printing seems to be in fashion at the moment but I am not convinced that the 6mp DSLRs are up to this size of print. I would not have gone much beyond 10x8 with 35mm film 15 years ago though film has possibly improved since then.
I have had a print done at this size and was pleased with it but when I see the quality produced by medium format film I know that the digital print is not yet in the same league.
Andy Rouse has used digital for a long time now and I'm sure its done him no harm.
The number of pros using digital seems to be quite a number and forever growing. How many of the billboards around the country were shot with digial, how many with film?
I sure dont know and I think that that in itself says something, its incredibly hard to spot a digital image from a film image even on something the size of a billboard. I personally would say the "quality" question isnt a real factor anymore.
Yup ..... almost all of my clients want digital, not used a roll of film on a job in almost 3 years and that was 5/4".
With GF I have pushed images to 20/30ins without any loss of quality

We had a pro in recently doing some shots of new roomsets in our showroom, which are for our new brochures and also used for advertising.
Last time he was in he was using large format film, this time he had a Nikon D2X. Guess it's good enough for him and our marketing director.

I run a totally digital commercial studio...my main two customers have the country's largest marketing spend in Europe. Any body starting out in the game now, would be crazy not to invest from the off in high end digital equipment.
cameras like the 1DS and D2x easily match 645 MF film quality, MF digital backs outdo LF film...and as far as LF scanning backs go....well the quality exceeds anything I've ever seen. Lets be right here, the 300D out performs any 35mm film counterpart these days.
I have been involved with fashion photography in london (on the other side of the camera) for a couple of years now.
The digital/film split has been about 50/50. It's not the quality that I have noticed as a difference, but raw digital photography is often too 'real' ... has additional qualities that can really add to the final result. Of course, the effects of film can be added afterwards, if there are skilled enough retouchers.
