I have looked in the archieves and can not see if this has been raised before but here it goes.

Have just started geting into the photography and so far have had some sucess by just taking pictures and then printing them..simple.

So should there be categories on here
just for WYSIWYG pictures as i am a firm believer that pictures should be 'as seen' or should we go back and touch up a few of the old masters in the gallery just so we can get them to be what we wish and not what we would like to see..i am a digital photographer by the way.

There the guantlet has been firmly thrown to the floor..Dave

It has been discussed many times before, recently Art or Photography and The Death of Photographic Portraiture but there are many more, try searching for digital manipulation think you will be surprised at what you find Wink

Not much of a challenge there Dave. There is a body of Epz'ers (just behind me) that will give you their views very shortly.

Personally I respect your view. I may not necessarily agree with it though.

I think the "general" category would usually suffice for WYSIWYG pictures, although there is no reason not to insert them in another category if the category description fits that particulr picture more accurately.

Most of the pictures on this site have been modified in one way or another - some have argued that just scanning in an old negative, resizing and posting for the web is "digital enhancement" - whatever.

As for altering old masters - I have seen numerous ad campaigns/comedy sketches "enhancing" well known pictures by old masters - none, so far, have been an improvement.

It is really a matter of personal taste.

In the distant far off days, there was a man who, in many cases, earnt more than the photographers he worked for. In fact there were many such men, but they all went by the tag of 'The Print Man.' It was his job to take the negs and produce a PRINT. Skilled beyond words and usually a man of very few of his own, he would dodge, burn, layer, mask, sharpen, soften, colour etc... and then Print. A photo is a photo...a Print is a PRINT.

Not really WYSIWYG though is it?

    More like WTCSPTTISLL

    ie

What The Camera Software Thinks The Image Should Look Like.

What about if you want to do black and white stuff with a digital camera and your model has no black and white mode?? Why stunt your own ambitions just so you can stick rigidly to what comes out of the camera?.

If you're so pure...... why not set the camera in fully auto mode and let it do ALL the work??

I personally didn't spend hundreds on my DSLR only to restrict how my pictures end up looking.... or stunt my own development as a photographer.

So, as much as you're entitled to your opinion. You're wrong!

    ;O)

Of course film is no good for WYSIWYG either, as every emulsion will render the scene differently. Then everyones scanner will change that a bit more.

    . . . to bring back his body . . .

I heard some rubbish spouted in this forum but the above doesn't come even half close.

Where's the well reasoned argument for and against? Where's the clever, witty retort and banter?

    You're a T*ss*er!
    No I'm not!
    Yes you are!
    No I'm not!

Our grandparents and fathers fought and died for the right to freedom of speech - and the above thread responses are the best you lot can do - you ought to be ashamed of yourselves!!

...Now, Flash, that's how you are supposed to get a good argument going!

    WYSIWYG
Well I don't think you've looked through the gallery 'cos there's b*%#$y loads of these and non of them get much interest.
It's like telling women never to wear make-up or maybe telling the England cricket/football team not to bother practising and to rely on their natural born skills ( note to self: maybe Sven's already tried that)

If it can be improved with a bit of subtle manipulation, emphasis on subtle, then manipulate I say.

So its seems that there are many emotional topics on here...i thought i would throw a large stone into this pond and see if it started a tsunami...

Seems that most people on here are as touchy (ed) as their pictures....

As BT would say "its good to talk"
