Surely its not just me that thinks there poor value for money
I've been very disappointed whenever I've bought one, At least half the mag seems to be adverts.
There is normally a small reader questions section, not to likely to be relevant to the individual reader
The same old articles regurgitated over and over again, OK they may be edited but its the same stuff just re-written in a different way.
Maybe an interview with some photographer I've never heard of, which isn't difficult cos I've only ever heard of David Bailey and, er.....Me.
And they cost about 5,,, FIVE POUND,, they should be bloody free the amount of advertising in there. Ive seen less adverts in Exchange & Mart.
OK, you get the latest news and reviews but you can find them for free in hundreds of places on the internet, including that fabulous ephotozine site, have you heard of that one ? they even have a book coming out you know.
Whenever a free few months subscription comes with a new bit of kit or whatever then sure I'll take it.
I once read a good article about photographing woodpeckers.
Reviews are handy too.
I don't think I'd be persuaded to buy one, unless I was really bored at an airport or somewhere.
I quite like some of them, usually not the digital only ones (which are the pricey ones). I usually buy them so i have something to read in the bath and i find them quite good for giving me ideas and inspiration.
An interview with someone you haven't heard of is surely better than someone you have ? And as for adverts, show me a magazine (or website) not covered in them, not expecting it is a little niave.
Rather buy a couple of pints to be honest. Cant say I've actually enjoyed any mag or found inspiration in any one them. Tried a technique article out of one once and didnt get past the the front page, it was all wrong. There are too many anyway, how on earth do you decide which one you'd like to buy regular when they are so expensive. EPZ is far better value for money ![]()
Got into photography a couple of years ago and started buying mags. Now just get OP and occasionally B&W . . . the rest just got boring and overly repetitive. Still enjoy flicking through Nat Geog . .
I used to buy them all. Gave me something to do while commuting 2500 miles to and from work, and hanging around hotels. But, now I buy "Outdoor Photographer," Photolife, (Canadian}, and Nature Photographer. The last 2 are quarterly. I do agree that most mags are too repetitive. I was looking through the ads in one yesterday and spotted a real deal, Nikon's 200-400mm f4 for $799.99. Went to the website, it was $5099.99. I see this all the time, so the ads are a joke.
Yep, NG gets my vote. I took a look at TDP and it was pretty ordinary, no wonder they canned it. Going to have a peek at PM.
To be honest my inspiration comes from either this site or getting out there and searching.

The best of the mags are the hardest ones to get hold of... try Ag, Hotshoe, Lenswork... etc. Interesting images, no reviews, and few if any adverts, of course the prices are high, but so is the print quality.
Of the mainstream mags Black & White Photography (not just saying that because Pete contributes) and the weeklies are best AP and BJP - maybe a touch biased about AP at the mo' ![]()
I particularly like the collectable camera articles, and very in depth lens reviews in AP. Other than that there are far too many mags covering exactly the same ground, there really are only so many technique articles for a general photo mag to run each month.
If you are looking for specialist magazines also check out the work of Arem Publishing. They do a B&W and a Digital mag. Both very high quality, with some inspiring work.
Think there is a download sample as well.
I found Practical photographer to be quite informative and very inspirational in the first few months of my new hobby. However the pages of adverts does make you wonder especially as I pay three times the shop price here in Iceland. But it was a websearch for this magazine that brought me to this site... need I say more?
