The light sensitive ingredient in photographic film and papers that is a
combination of silver with bromine, fluorine, chlorine or iodine. Exposed silver
halide particles form metallic silver that turns black when developed. Unexposed
particles are dissolved by the fixer, leaving a permanent
image.
