Using a staged feeder setup next to a perch in the garden, many hours of waiting and 'not quite there' shots, managed to get one that seemed just right

if this is one image and not a combi of two - ie static bird and flight bird then very well done for picking the moment
at 400mm and a crop sensor your depth of field would not have been vast so the timing so that both birds were within a similar focal plane is spot on. i am always a little envious of Goldfinch images anyway as whilst they visit here they just will not come down from the tree tops - sorry, rambling on then i though i was at a club - sooooo, a Goldfinch in flight is a marvellous achievement in my book.

Hi, its kind of one shot, from memory I think the two birds were a bit further apart and I brought them nearer together in photoshop as there was a big dead space between them , so Im afraid it's not a shot straight out of camera as such. There were literally hundreds of duff shots on this one, and maybe two or three that worked, of which this is the only one I have left as unfortunately I had my laptop stolen, with every image Ive ever taken on last year, the only shots I have from before this spring are the odd one I had on other websites. A harsh way to learn the importance of backing everything up!
Tips for getting goldfinches down by the way is Sunflower kernels, they go absolutely mad for them, and it's only finches can really get them open. For this setup there were probably 10-15 birds on the feeders at the same time. Greatly increases your chances of getting good shots!
IMHO however it was arrived at, the result is great. I can certainly empathise with the "many hours of waiting" as I am a long way off arriving at anything approaching this. It's results such as this (and all the other posts on this great site) that spur me on. Thanks for sharing - and the Sunflower seeds tip! ![]()
Excellent shot, even if it is a bit tweaked.
Interesting what you say about sunflowers, last winter they weren't to keen, peanuts was all the rage and grease balls. This winter I get loads of tits and now the odd chaffinch since I feed sunflower. Niger seed didn't work that well, but now I can see what you achieved I will keep trying
Having said that Ive had sunflower and niger both out this last couple of weeks and haven't had many goldfinches at all. Maybe they do change their tastes form year to year! this shot was taken later into winter I think so maybe when their natural foodsources are a bit scarcer. Still lots of berires about at the moment.
Thanks for the comments, much appreciated
