Night exploration and playing in the inky darkness is the aim of this coaching group.
To ask questions, give advice and find answers to the mysteries of shooting at night
This is an invitation for you to upload your night time images here for us all to learn more about shooting at night.
Playing with light in the dark with torches, fire, wire wool, traffic or whatever medium you might choose to create your night time shots.
This is for all levels (whatever that means to you) if you have never taken shots at night, you would be most welcome to start here. If youre brilliant at it, then do please join to help and support others.

Good to be here... Ive not given up!
Infact I have one personal image that, to achieve, knowledge of this subject is vital ![]()
Howdy
Might be a while before I can upload something but should be an interesting discussion.
Ian
Hya Aid, thanks for joining in...yes its a meeting of minds in the inky darkness
you post up images through the group meeting here (look above the images at the top of the page it says click here to upload ) and then you add your cam settings (or whatever) and so on and we coach each other to get better shots at night, better long expos and so we can all master a bit of light painting too ....if that lights your fire
ask any questions you might have and we can all try to answer them to assist each other (we will all have different ideas and views and that the essence of this group)
thats about it and thanks for joining in, we will all be fab night shooters by the end of the meet, well it is a year!
D
8 so far - pretty good ![]()
most of my stuff from now till March will be night stuff so hope I don't flood this group ![]()
how many shall we put in to the group then as many as we like ?
Ade I must pick your brains about HDR at night too I have done one or two I'll link them in a bit, I can beleive I am thinking about messing with my night shots in Pshop (Cirrus's fault, he started me off with the desat. brush)
thanks though Tim... worked I think
I'm still a HDR agnostic, I see a fair few which have that balance between cartoon like look and a hyper-real look, but a certain subtleness always seems to be abandoned in the final results... it sure has it's place for certain types of images, just not sure I could live with any easily. Here is probably not the place for such ramblings, just don't want the long exposure/night area becoming a HDR area I suppose.
I think I would only use it, HDR that is, (if I did again) for objects such as cars though, I can not imagine it for some of the other stuff I do like trails and light painting
cant see it working with long expo's anyway cos when I used it, it was 30 second hits I think no more .....
I do have a question for this group though
I have a vision to be realised (at night) that contains fire in it..how do you shoot a long expo without burning out with the bright fire in the frame ?
any ideas please would be most welcome
thanks
Quote: just don't want the long exposure/night area becoming a HDR area I suppose.
should we start a night HDR group instead?
Just that every night shot I do will be HDR - I'll bugger off to my own thread if I'm not welcome here ![]()

simple - use HDR
take 3-5 exposures, 2 stops apart, blend in a HDR creator like Photomatix, tone map and process in Photoshop.
That's what HDR does - makes impossible shots possible ![]()
I clearly need to come to a camera club near you guys and do my talk on HDR!
do both - all you're doing with HDR at the photography stage is bracketting after all ![]()
take 3-5 images
if that doesn't do the trick when you're processing at home - you then have the option of HDR ![]()
Hya Andy, welcome and thanks for joining in
you can add it to the group by going to EDIT your photo then add it to a meeting, if you are in this group (which you now are) this meeting should pop up in the meetings box so then pop into the group ..if that is not correct Ade will probably be able to tell you better than me
or you can add it drectly to the group at the top of this page (either works)
now go shoot that haunted house at night,
if I was closer to you I'd be there in a flash!!!
is that assylum accessible at night ? (how far away are you ?) ![]()
(if I get any CPD conferences coming up round your way, I'll PM you for sure)

If your vision involves a very long exposure, a composite may be the only way!
Hey Rick, some peeps done like crits on ther images ( so I have learned) so I'll leave mine on your bridge in here
I really like it....but how come its so bright though after only 8 secs? (puzzled)
either there is already lots of light around, even at night, looks pretty well lit to me
or to go darker (which I would but maybe you prefer it this way) I'd make the apperture smaller to expose for longer (and then you get pretty starry lights) or its an ISO thing, what did you use ?
@ Tim...
that vision is still fermenting in my brain, (like they do) I may have a play tonight if my friendly pyromanics come out to play tonight,
you know I cant do compos ....
but hey, maybe its time to learn
But it wont be a very long expo cos of the clouds (this time of year) they just go a funny orange if I long expo when its cloudy, if its a clear night tonight it will be a long one, well thats if I dont get in trouble first for the fire..
all in a nights shooting !
What i love about night shots is the extra detail captured by long shutter speeds, movement is a bonus.

how about using something to obscure the fire, like if you memorise where it is in the frame, you could use your hand or a piece of card to dodge the flaames so they don't burn out :o)
Lol I might indulge a little in this group, just a shame that at present you can only link to a single group.
I`ve set another night group up, not to rival this, as only retro trip 35 users need apply ![]()
Quote: @ Goggz...hmmm worth thinking about yes, can see how it would work with fireworks
Yeah, just place a card over the lens to obscure everything then remove when a firework goes upward...
Quote: I'll try it with flames next time
I was thinking of something shaped like a lollipop so that you have a smallish round piece of card that you wave around gently over the line of sight to the fire (assuming it isn't a huge conflagration!!) so that it blocks out the fire for a part of the exposure that is sufficient to ensure it doesn't burn out...
You would need to practice by looking through the viewfinder before committing to the shot, so you could see how far away the lollipop card would need to be held to cover the required area. I hope that makes more sense??

No worries, just added my offering.
Could be a while before I add any more, got a carrier bag full of film that needs processing ![]()
Quote: That's what HDR does - makes impossible shots possible
My film scanner software caters for HDR, so might have a play at some point.
nope Goggz not an ounce of sense
lol
sorry...I dont really learn by reading..I just learn by doing it..but I'll try to think lollipops next time I set the park on fire !
the two seem to go together in an obscure way
I'm sure you can see it in your head..but sorry I just cant.....
thanks for thinking it through
(and whats a cold cathode?) sounds scarey
Welcome Penny
Diana

Thanks for the welcome & the chance to learn by doing.
Is there any interest in having a night meet, preferably when there isn't much moon?
Your welcome Penny was a good choice of location for a quickie!
yeah definately, next year I will have some free time I hope (from all this years madness)
I'd love a night time road trip, I have already been invited by Moira (Woollybill et al.) to shoot the Angel @ night, so cant wait for that, and some other places like assylums up north by others
I can feel another article coming on ![]()
we have 33 images so far which is cool, would love some crit on my lightpainting ones though from others in the group, to get some more ideas and so on...
my red wire to emulate fire has arrived today, picking it up later tonight I hope when we go out, but not setting the park on fire till next week now with that !
I want to do some light abstracts ....but either I need some orange gels..or I can mix some of my own up but what colours make orange?
any ideas .....anyone ?
Just added another, spent a very enjoyable couple of hours out in the blizzard Monday night.
Used mainly film, a did get a few digital using the lensbaby, slipped on my ass a fair few times ![]()
Hiya,
I have just started a new topic in the forum - re trying to organise a London night photography trip if anyone's intersted? I thought it unfair to expect my other half to hang around whilst I take pictures! I'd like to do it soon whilst the Christmas lights are still up and perhaps after it's been raining. Drop me a line if anyone fancies it!
Many Thanks,
Becky
Hey there Becky, why dont you join the group and upload your night shots of London?
this is a virtual meeting place of minds ..ideas and tips and so on......(hope someone agrees to meet up with you from the forum link of course)
Hey KLewis thanks for joining !
more the merrier !

Sorry for the late reply Diana just picked up on your message , have added a shot and will add some more . st marys asylyums is deffo accessible at night although it is some 50 mile from me so would need to forward plan a night visit but i would be up for it as maybe some others too ![]()
love your shots on that link you sent to me crazy and fab !
.... thanks for that I have PM'd you about further asylum shoots
when your ready, no rush, there is only one close-ish to me, but it has mostly been knocked down, already been there ![]()
i have just seen this and became a member, i donot know much about the purpose and tried to experiment with the light using a technique posted in this site...
yes Diana you are right, it is pretty wild indeed, it is just a start, but i find that artificial movement given to the torch resulting this error, is there any way out to give a constant movement to form a proper subject whichever i want...
Diana Happy New Year to you and all the members,
you can give feedback anywhere in my image or here, it will be very much appreciated...
Hya
thanks for the message in the group room
OK Ill do it here then, makes it easier for you to find, if you think it will be helpful to the group you can copy it in there if you like
But I dont see anything wrong with this, and wouldnt have a clue on how to improve upon it!
Lightpainting is an art and everyone develops a style of their own, (for instance look at mine and Pennys bandstand shots, same bandstand, same time but totally different interpretations)
Personally I have never read an instruction manual, and although I believe some of the help on here is good I dont get past the first sentence if it doesnt grab me.....
and that instruction thingy written by the Boss is probably brilliant but its way too wordy for me to get through
So I didnt read it all so dont really know what its telling you to do. (Guessing... make a light spirograph abstract rather than a face)
Did you know Picasso was a lightpainter? some of his stuff is wild
so it is never about perfection, you just work with your own interpretation, it will be fine.
I just learn by doing...I cant give you techniques, I dont follow any... I do it all by feeling...(hard to explain) an idea just ferments in my brain and I then have to realise it... in what ever way I can
but I am always happy to answer any questions you might have, you have a great eye so it wont take long before you master a style of your own, so keep doing it (careful though it's addictive)
So basically I cant give you feedback on this technique cos I have never done it, nor would I really ...its not the kind of thing I would enjoy doing, but a good lesson in learning how to play with light for sure
hope that helps
Diana
Thanks Diana i will try...
Hi there,
Not sure if this would the best place to ask this as im a beginner. But here goes:
Im truly struggling with Night Photography. Ive got a Canon 1000D and usually use my 28-135mm, set to AV. My photos always seem very washed out and lack sharpness.
Again im sorry if this isn't the right place to post, but thought i would try.
Jac
well Jac you need to study carefully the camera manuals, it took me one month to explore, try to read in camera histogram, you need to enhance the sharpness in camera settings and a tripod is a must for night photography, a cable release or remote release will be very helpful, you need to use manual mode for more creativity...
Thanx,
Could you give me any sort of example of a setup you would use for night shots. I understand lighting is a huge factor. But anything would help.
well you can see the set up given in my last image, i have just set the camera on tripod, mirror locked, selftimer 2 seconds, and pressed the button, then i have used a torch to paint the hand, slightly on the chain as well, the result you can see...
Hi Froggy
thanks for your visit, Hey why not join the group ?
You'd be very welcome ![]()
HERES MY SET OF OF RULES:
throw all the manuals away!!!
.......and get out there and shoot
what exactly would you like to know ?
and are you asking about shooting outside at night, cos thats the way I read your question
You need to learn how to focus in the dark and bingo all your night shots will be sharp, do you know how to focus at night ?
Diana
Hi Simon, thanks for coming on in
so.. just a thought, what has anyone got from being in this group, if nothing do say so please
Do any of you come and look in here....
is there anything that you would like from the group that you are not currently recieving
I think if we had notifications of posting in here it woul be more lively ?
any other thoughts would be most welcome
thank you
Diana
Hi Diana, thanks for the invite, i hope to pick up some ideas & tips here. I did try to upload an image but found it went into the main gallery, having now read the previous comments i will have another go soon,
Regards to all
Hi guys !! I am new here ... and would love to know something about night photography. ![]()
Will upload oneor two photographs which I have taken soon.... ![]()
Nishad
Welcome Roy, nice to see you here
are landscapes that are taken at sunset really deserving of this specialist (IMO) night low light category ?
yet people add them to the night category does that bug anyone else like it bugs me ?
for me night is the night time !
any thoughts?
Diana,
Congrats for establishing this new group. I cannot come to meet, as I am far away from UK, but I'll do my best to contribute. Got a question:
can I upload photos that have already posted on epz?
Best of luck and kind regards,
Nezih Onur
Hi Nonur sorry I have missed your postings in here, you have a link on your upload that asks what meeting you wish to upload it to
just open the box up and as you are a member of this group now this meeting should show up, just click on it
