Wildwood

It is just over a couple of years since I organised a meet at Wildwood and I have been asked to organise another one!
So here it is!

The last day of January saw 20 ePHOTOziners turning up at Wildwood, the native wildlife park near Herne Bay in Kent, for what turned out to be an excellent day of frivolity and photography!

By 10.30am most were encamped in the cafeteria on site, imbibing hot drinks after travelling up to 200 miles to get there. (One member ( Patricia Fenn ) actually came over two thousand miles, but not on the morning!)

The sun came too! Weather for a meet in January can sometimes play havoc with plans, but the snow that was forecast for the following day behaved itself and stayed away until well after everyone (well almost everyone) had got home. It was still cold though, very cold. And those that braved the day were rewarded with a number of the hardier animals showing themselves, although they mostly kept their appearances until the afternoon session.

There was however, Wildwood’s own wildlife including woodpeckers, squirrels and others that put in appearances around the cafeteria area. Somebody even managed to photograph a Robin!! (Wide-angle lens required)
Half way through the day a couple of Photographers who were wandering around the venue were identified as members of ePz and were promptly berated for not reading the forums, but they still joined in the rest of the day’s activities.

One of the fox enclosures sported a fox that curled up in full view of everyone but decided it was not even going to raise it’s head until everyone was heading for the gate at the end of the day, however a few of the other animals, most notably the two Lynx did put on fine shows during the day.

By 3pm, most folks were back at the cafe furiously using the last of their frozen battery power to chimp through and find an image to put in for the competition. The rules were quite simple, take a photograph on the day and enter it. No processing, no Photoshop, no cropping, just an image straight out of the camera.
The judges, press ganged from the staff and manager of the Wildwood Gift shop were extremely impressed with the standard of images, expressing surprise that they had been taken on such a winter’s day and took some time to decide on an order of merit. They did manage though, and it is always interesting to see the choices of a totally non-photographic jury.

The winners were:

1st SteveHunter lynx Pentax Fleece
2nd Fran French, Polecat, 1gb USB stick
3rd Dawn (Whiteswan01), Wolf, Delux Beanbag
4th Sue (Fishing), Pine Marten, Car Hide
5th Alex (Overread), Stork, Bag
6th Shirley, Deer, Universal Lenscap

A few made a day of it with a meal at the local hostelry afterwards while those that had travelled had trains and buses to catch to make their way homewards. It seems though, that all had a good day out and we look forward to meeting up again.
