I previously uploaded this in the critique gallery so would be interested to see how the comments differ. This is a shot for work where I was asked to emphasize the size of the motors. I already know a person would have helped.

+ it's a decent brochure shot, I think you've got what they needed and will look good in print
+ Bright and light all around - and the place looks clean
+ I like the perspective you've added - not just looking front on, but getting a bit of an angle in there too
- it's not a subject I know of or have an interest in, so can't say whether it's fit for purpose or not
- can't really see what the ducting on the right is doing or where it's going
- the inclusion of anything recognisable would give scale - a wheel barrow or anything, doesn't have to be human
....that was a hard one!
+ Nice use of the main colours Orange/Blue
+ Good wide angle perspective & lowish diagonal viewpoint.
+ well & evenly lit
- I think a person (obviously in suitable PPE, possibly at one of the switching panels) would give a good sense of scale.
- a closer crop to eliminate the electrical cabling down the right side and the square metal (ducting?) and orange (maintainance stands?) on the left of the motors.
- hard to think od a third minus point, but a quick brush of the floor wouldn't have done any harm!
... having worked in an industrial setting (power station) for 34 years & taken plenty of pics it all looks pretty dust & dirt free in there.

+ clean & sharp. As a thumbnail it would have got me opening it to look closer
+ pov helps assess the size
+ you gave them what they asked for - well exposed
- need to crop the rhs, the vertical black cable cover distracts
- as said, needs a referanse point for size.
- being a brochure shot of something I know nothing about leaves me cold
'Twas hard to find 3 minus comments!
Thanks guys, the fact you are struggling to find 3 negatives is, I guess, a positive. Fair point on the cabling to the rhs, that could be cropped. A bit more difficult with the clutter down the left. This is a construction site and so barriers etc are always a problem. These are protecting the area where the first motor has been removed.

great comp
vivid colours
and shows your work enviroment
someone left there silver ctr tv in the shot lower mid left![]()
you clipped very slightly the black box far right
thats it from me ![]()
Likes:
complementary colours, pov, geometric lines.
Dislikes: I'm female, this is boring - but for a product image probably would work great.
A person would have been great in the compo, but size can be inferred by the control boxes at right - you have to be able to reach the switches
To much info on the left that doesn't need to be in the image. simplify.
+Loads of bright orange and blues
+View point
+Clean with plenty of detail
-Un interesting subject, unless your into machines.
-Its a record shot
-Background a little cluttered, but there`s not a lot you could do about that
+ Does what it should as a record shot
+ Low viewpoint does have emphasis on size
+ Angle of view gives dynamic shapes
- Very much feels like a snap shot
- Subject distorted due to wide angle approach
- Polarising filter should have been used to reduce glare on painted areas.
Taking this at a different angle, maybe from the floor up, could help emphasise the size and make a more interesting image. Move away from the skylights as well. The striplights on the other side look far more industrial and don't distract with an overly bright area. Good colours, nice eye popping orange and looks like the makings of a science fiction, arty type image. ![]()
Thanks Jane, I took this as low as possible whilst maintaining the verticals plumb. This was quite important as the image was going to be displayed on a 42" screen in the office. However, once I had bagged this shot I could have gone as low as possible and not worried about the verticals. I think I was a bit blinkered when taking this!

Quote: Pete, could you elaborate on why it feels like a snap shot?
A snap shot is one that could have been taken by anyone with any level of camera, a point and shoot shot - and that's how it feels...can't really elaborate any more.
Quote: I didn't realise I could reduce glare from painted metallic surfaces so I will bear that in mind in future.
Yes but only painted metal and it will work well - a polariser has no affect on bare metal.
+ Having worked in this industry I can relate to the Pump/Engine Room environment and so it probably follows on that I like this Shot, firstly for the whole general atmosphere, secondly the natural lighting with Orange and Blue works well.
+ As the Picture is taken for work related publication, I believe the height you shot from is spot on, therefore I think you have captured it well in that respect.
+ I like the depiction that these Machines are monsters in their field, yet the nose and spectacle wearing eyes have a humourous note to them.
- Not sure if the Control Panels go all the way back to the far wall, if not, I just wonder if you would have been able to move the angle of view slightly to show a gap between the end of the Blue Panels, instead of them running into the Orange Motor.
- I realise these rooms always carry a certain amount of ongoing maintenance spares, just wondered if the section of Vent Trunking could have been hidden out of shot.
- I might have cloned to black, all of the strip lights and that little angled part of the top Skylight, along with the wee white bit, (Smoke or Heat Detector perhaps) also a few of the Orange shiny parts that have caught the light.
It would be interesting to see this same picture taken at Night with all those Panel lights lit up and just a little background light on the Orange Beasties.
Doug.
Thanks Doug, always good to here from someone who has worked in these places. I can't really get any separation as the panel is too long. Good idea about shooting at night but unfortunately we have installed an even bigger control panel between the motors and the existing one. I could do some other shots at night though so may give that a go.
