These are a couple of rather unusual cropped images of the planet Jupiter last night. It's very strange to try and imagine that this planet is a minimum of 365 million miles from the Earth! That is....well......'a very long way', (said Pooh Bear).
There are four moons orbiting Jupiter which are large enough to be visible through a reasonable home telescope, and three of them can just seen here. The four moons are Gannymede, Io, Europa, and Callista. As they are so small I've put a yellow 'X' above the three visible ones. (The fourth is behind the planet itself when this was taken).
These pics were taken @ 1/6 second with a Sigma 600mm f8 mirror lens and 2x converter - film equivalent of almost 2000mm).
I wasn't sure whether the pictures were interesting or good enough to put up, but here they are anyway.
Dave

Quote: I can see the moons on the larger version - just! Amazing to think how far away that is! Great shot!
Christina
cant argue with this comment - your a clever chap Dave
Nice shot. Very interesting. Thanks for the description.
Regards, Oleg.
Quote: This is so interesting Dave. Jupiter has been a wonderful site these last few clear nights - but I have never seen the moons! A lovely narrative which brings the image to life.
How about Venus now? x
I'll giver her a go soon (so to speak), Sue, but maybe after a couple of days, as this one was at 2am this morning. To get an idea of Jupiter's tiny size when viewed with the naked eye, these pics were cropped directly from a 1200mm (digital) 12.2MP image, no resizing...it's all good fun, thanks for the appreciative comments x Dave
yes they are valid photos .i shot Mars some months back and was fascinated that i could take photos of something like that from my back yard. They arnt great quality but i can see detail, and they are some of my favourite photos, they really got me interested and made me take this up as a hobby.Few million miles closer i think, but whats the odd million miles here or there? .Neil and family. 400d sigma 150 --500mm.

Hopefully they are valid photos, Neil.....otherwise not sure what I was doing freezing my ears off at 2am out of doors with a tripod if they aren't
I could have thought of warmer places to be right then...but as you say, they are fascinating, and at 365 million miles I didn't expect very much sharpness (!). Jupiter is 4x more distant from Earth than the moon, in comparison. Good luck with your photos of Mars.
Dave.
Well What can I say ...
This is how my moon shots come out on a good day ![]()
Great work keep them coming
and a big thanks for the chuckle on your comment today on my upload
***Woops to everyone, my figures mentioned above regarding the moon and Saturn are completely AWOL, (lack of sleep is my excuse
The distance from the Moon to Earth is approximately 240,000 (yes, thousand) miles. So when you're looking at 365 million miles, there is one heck of a difference!! I never was good at maths, but far from Saturn being 4x more distant than the moon, it is.....well, (said Pooh scratching his head).....MUCH MUCH much more. I think Saturn is well over 1000x more distant. Anyone good at maths?
Dave.
I meant Jupiter, not Saturn, in the above measurements. Off to the darkened room for a while ![]()

Two interesting images Dave, good to see something different uploaded on here
