You can wait (the best part of 50 years), you can plan, dream and then its down to little bit of luck, the combination of steam, snow, sun and a Scot on the S&C (Settle and Carlisle) line, is about as rare as it can get this was the only steam along this the most spectacular and highest main line in England between September and March and until a test run the trip was in doubt up until Thursday. The Royal Scot class has made only a handful of runs in the last forty years. Snow in the UK is all too rare and too much and it would not have been possible to drive up to the higher parts of the line.
So on Saturday, it was the right loco, the right headboard, right stock, A Royal Scot No 46115 Scot Guardman resplendent in Brunswick green livery with a maroon rake of Mk1 coaches and Thames Clyde Headboard, a covering of snow and unbelievably the sun poping out at last moment all that was left was take the shot and then get it off the camera safely. The shot is taken as the train was leaving Moorcock Tunnel not far from the summit at Ais Gill
The fact that this was coupled with the sight of seeing the brand new A1 Tornado blasting away from under the roof at Darlington earlier in the day with the up Talisman to Kings Cross and you begin to wonder if it is all a dream in 2009.

A Scot on the Thames-Clyde over the S&C! What more could a railway photographer ask for. Only that the elements worked in your favour and they most certainly did here. The snow, sky, sunlight and even the exhaust (although drifting to the wrong side) framing the subject to maximum effect. 100% PERFECTION!!!!!!!

Can any image on EPZ ever have received so many awards? I doubt it - but my goodness everyone of them is justly deserved. I sprained my wrist scrolling down to the bottom of the comments. Many congratulations.
Very new convert to digital photography (refugee of a faithful old Pentax MX which I still keep loaded with film). Still finding my way around the camera (Pentax K10D) but I am constantly amazed by what it can do.
So pleased to be 220th! What a wonderful image where everything got together in just one tiny moment - lovely scenery, great engine, crispy winter weather, snow, sun and of course your skills and dedication to steam trains history. All awards much deserved. Congratulations!
